What is bursitis? • Inflammation of the joints • Bursa are small, fluid filled sacs that lubricate and relieve pressure between the bones, tendons and muscles near the joints • Over 15o bursae in the body • Bursa helps make movement easy, painless • Inflammation makes movement difficult, painful

  3. Causes of Bursitis • Most common causes are overuse, direct trauma to a joint • Repeated bumping or kneeling • Sharp blow to the joints • Prevalent in the hips, ankles, knees, shoulders and elbows. • Infection, arthritis

  4. Symptoms • Pain during movement • Redness in area of inflamed bursa • Swelling of the joints • Warmth over injured joint

  7. Cellular Pathology of Bursitis • Blows to the joints cause blood vessels in the tissues that make up bursa to rip and tear • Blood enters the bursa through the torn vessels • Blood in bursa causes inflammatory reaction • Walls of bursa thicken

  8. Treatment • Ice to reduce swelling • Anti-Inflammatory drugs to relieve pain and to reduce swelling • Injection of corticosteroid to infected area • Antibiotics • Surgery may be needed to drain fluid from bursa • Rehab
