  2. Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was a wonderful woman. Her nickname was Moses, and she helped many helpless slaves get to freedom. In 1850, after Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Act, making it illegal to help a runaway slave, Tubman decided to join the Underground Railroad. At her first time, she led her sister and her sister’s daughters to freedom. She became the most famous leader of the Underground Railroad. From that time until the Civil War, Tubman traveled South 18 times to help slaves get to freedom. During the Civil War, Tubman served as a nurse, scout, and some time spy for the Union Army, mainly in South Carolina. She took part in a military campaign that

  3. Harriet Tubman Resulted in the rescue of 756 slaves and destroyed millions of dollars worth the enemy property! After the war, she returned to Auburn and continued her involvement in social issues and women’s rights.

  4. Joeseph Bailey An Ohio-born Wisconsin Civil engineer and lumberman, Joseph Bailey, entered the Union army and became one of only 14 men to receive the Thanks of Congress for the Civil War. After taking part in the capture of New Orleans, he soon became acting chief engineer of the city’s defenses. On July 7, 1865, he was shot and killed on March 21, 1869 while serving as a Missouri sheriff.
