  18. A reason why War was fought. • In the South they depended on slaves to survive, the white slave owners made African Americans work for them in terrible conditions. • The usage of slaves in the South was essential for their economy to prosper. • The plantations grew cotton then sold it, these cotton items were sold and these plantation owners became very successful. http://www.sonofthesouth.net/slavery/photographs/plantation-slaves.jpg

  19. Slavery During this Time. • The roots of slavery began in 1619 when 20 Africans were brought to an English colony and sold to them. • In 1661 a reference to slavery was entered into Virginias law. • African Americans fates were sealed when the slave codes of 1705 was put into place. • This statues lasted for 160 years, until the end of the Civil War as people fought for freedom.

  20. Causes • A Man named Abraham Lincoln after being elected in 1860 was seen as a threat to the South because of his strong views against slaver. • Abraham Lincoln was a man that strongly supported the 13th Amendment. http://www.topicsites.com/abraham-lincoln/Abraham-Lincoln-bw13.jpg

  21. The 13th Amendment. • Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction. • Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

  22. Growing Apart, Day by Day • Inside the South, certain Southern states began to put strain on one another with ideals that were growing different. • These confrontations made the Civil War inevitable with the growth of industrialization in the North and through the population boom of the Union. http://boles.com/called/07/coflag10.jpg http://www.wvdot.com/crossings/Graphics/Civil%20War%20Cannon.jpg

  23. Growing Frustrations • Heightened tensions with instate ideals resulted in the state nicknaming Kansas, Bleeding Kansas. • Kansas’s grounds were nicknamed bleeding Kansas because it became a battleground for people that wanted the state to be a slave state versus a free state. http://www-cgsc.army.mil/carl/resources/ftlvn/briefhist/images/PG26.jpg

  24. The Movement • An Abolitionist movement heightened tensions between states during the 1820’s to 1830’s • This movement led the way to the Civil War. • With people from Northern States expressing to the confederates that it was morally wrong to have slaves Southern states also expressed their frustrations.

  25. After the Moments • Get into groups of 5 or 6 students in your classroom and choose one situation that was taught today from the Civil War. • Within your group depict a modern day showing of the event that you chose. • This skit will be presented during the class. Beginning of the Section

  26. Moments that took breathes • The battle of Gettysburg was probably the most infamous battle of all the battles during the Civil War. The battle ended with 160,000 Americans losing their lives for their own sides causes. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.soldierstudies.org/images/webquest/civil%2520war%2520soldiers.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.soldierstudies.org/index.php%3Faction%3Dletters_webquest&h=435&w=449&sz=39&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=OCZN92QN_8HvHM:&tbnh=123&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dthe%2BCivil%2BWar%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den

  27. Video of the War, (Reenactment) • As many Americans had lost their lives during this battle and during the whole course of the Civil War, a group does a reenactment to depict what happened on that day. • http://youtube.com/watch?v=EDxrB9-7tHY This link will show you some of the things that happened. http://www.sarahhadley.com/images/magazine/20070520_0954.jpg

  28. The Address that changed the World • The Battle of Gettysburg was seen as a turning point in the Civil War where Abraham Lincoln gives the Gettysburg Address. • The Gettysburg Address was a carefully crafted speech that gave the Union hope and started a revolution that would end in the South’s defeat. http://lincolnstore.com/GettysburgAddress2006.jpg

  29. The Emancipation Proclamation • After the Union’s victory at Antietam, Lincoln released the Emancipation Proclamation. It states to the South that if they do not join the Union states within the Southern States would be freed. Freedom

  30. Although the South hadn't freed all of their Slaves it was important for the Unions because the Emancipation Proclamation allowed much needed black soldiers to fight for their freedom. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://bp3.blogger.com/_89GTuwvH93k/Rm2zIhf-Y3I/AAAAAAAAAVY/D2RJ7v_zORo/s320/black04.jpg&imgrefurl=http://godsrbored.blogspot.com/2007_06_01_archive.html&h=297&w=280&sz=16&hl=en&start=9&um=1&tbnid=a2KrSD36wLM8YM:&tbnh=116&tbnw=109&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dthe%2Bcivil%2Bwar,%2Bsoldiers,%2Bblacks%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den

  31. The “Other” Soldiers. • About 180,000 African Americans fought during the Civil War after the Emancipation Proclamation. • Soldiers that fought during the war were paid $10.00 and $3.50 for clothing allowance. • There was a discrimination in pay though comparing the slaves pay and white soldiers during the Civil War.

  32. The Case that wanted Freedom. • Dred Scott was a black man that wanted freedom in the year 1847 from His Masters Widow but failed to receive freedom due to being unable to prove that Emerson had once owned Scott and his family • Scott attempted to be set free many times but failed because of the supreme court justices that were in favor of slavery. • While many Southerns were pleased with how this case turned out many Northerners were upset because of the unfair ruling and the continued slavery in the South. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4p2932.html

  33. The end product • As one of our last major events during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. • Abraham Lincoln was a big supporter of freedom with blacks and was killed because of his beliefs for a free state. http://oneworldpeople.org/images/logo.jpg

Apply your learning. • After learning and going through this lesson go through and talk about some of these defining moments in an open class discussion. • With students participating try relating to some of those situations. • It may be difficult but attempt it. • Bring important insight that may shine light unto the students during this time.
