  7. Why is Attendance Important? • Research shows that students who attend school each day: • Get better grades • Learn more • Graduate on time, with their class • Are less likely to go to prison (Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, 2004)

  8. Why Am I Not in Class on Time? • REASONS FOR BEING LATE • WHO’S ACCOUNTABLE? • WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE MY ATTENDANCE? • THINK ABOUT YOUR REASONS

Think about these questions: • What time do you need to get up in the morning in order to arrive in class on time everyday? • What do you take time doing in the morning that you could do the night before? • Are YOU accountable for getting to class on time, everyday? • If you are not accountable, who should be?

  10. Attendance Rules and Policies • 0 period: 6:56 A.M. 1st period: 8:00 A.M. • Excused absences: illness, medical/dental, death of relative, court appearance. Parent must call to excuse within three days. • Consequences for tardies and absences: • Short term: Missing class instruction and class work time • Missing homework assignments and opportunity to turn in homework assignments for credit, ATS, In house, Suspension • Long term: Not ready for quizzes or tests, SARB, unable to pass classes, ineligible for graduation, or ineligible to participate in graduation ceremony due to excessive truancies

  12. Study Skills Some Old and New Ideas

  13. Study Skills You’ve Heard Before: • Have a specific location to complete your homework, without distractions. • Estimate how much time each assignment should take. • Have your worksheets, books, assignments, paper, pen, pencils, calculator, computer available and ready to use.

  14. More reminders and ideas: • Call friends/IM/Text/Facebook/MySpace AFTER your homework is complete. • Plan and schedule time to relax, eat, hang with friends. Make time to recharge. • Get enough sleep • Eat well/healthy • ASK: teachers/classmates/parents/counselor/AP for help. When overwhelmed, seek help.

  15. “Self Talk” makes a difference • Negative • Anxious • Ex: “Math has never been a strength for me. I’m never going to pass this exam.” • Positive • Task-oriented • Ex: “Math has never been a strength for me. But if I practice and ask questions, I should be okay.”

  18. Study-Skills • Ask questions, speak up, seek help • You are not alone, speak up • Attend tutoring, speak up • Study alone • Study with classmates, speak up • We care about you • We want to help you help yourself

  19. CHEATING: A Risk worth taking? Consequences: Letter grade drop or automatic fail Discipline record Revoking of college acceptance Ineligibility for graduation Disappointment of self/peers/parent/ guardian

  20. We all need fun, but we also need . . . to finish what we have started. You are almost there.

  21. What did you learn? Think of 4 people that you can turn to for help when you need it: EX: friends, teachers, counselor, parent, aunt, grandpa, brother, 6th grade teacher. Complete the homework and return it to your counselor by tomorrow afternoon.
