Warm Up 1 – Based on the information that you have so far, how effective was Edward as a monarch? In a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ style, record your score out of ten on a sheet, on the back write a short explanation; be prepared to hold it up and explain. Godwin, the most powerful earl in England, offered his daughter Edith as a wife to Edward. Godwin had a hand in the death of Edward’s brother Alfred and he has power, wealth, experience and influence. REFUSE ACCEPT

He seemingly ruled well until 1046 when he allied with the King of Wales to fight Welsh rebels (the King of the Welsh was an enemy of England), then on his way home he kidnapped the Abbess of Leominster and kept her. He was outlawed, went to Denmark, disgraced himself in an unknown way in Denmark, returned, murdered his cousin and was outlawed again. In 1049 Swegen attempted to return and apologise to Edward, he wanted his earldom and a return power. REFUSE ACCEPT

Magnus had expressed a desire to be King of England. In 1047, Godwin asked for Edward to send English ships to help Swegen to fight Magnus. REFUSE ACCEPT

Edward was a weak vacillating man, inevitably tainted by his traumatic upbringing. Even by the standards of the 11th century Edward had a particularly unfortunate upbringing; his father was dethroned, his brother was brutally murdered by his stepbrother and his mother abandoned him to marry the man who dethroned his father. The result was a man lacking in confidence, untrusting and, ultimately weak. As a consequence of his upbringing, Edward was relatively easily controlled by his three most powerful earls. He was never able to fully impose his will on the kingdom and thus his upbringing – and resulting personality - had a fundamental impact on Edward’s overall effectiveness as king.
