He was outlawed, went to Denmark, disgraced himself in an unknown way in Denmark, returned, murdered his cousin and was outlawed again. Edward was a weak vacillating man, inevitably tainted by his traumatic upbringing. Even by the standards of the 11th century Edward had a particularly unfortunate upbringing; his father was dethroned, his brother was brutally murdered by his stepbrother and his mother abandoned him to marry the man who dethroned his father. The result was a man lacking in confidence, untrusting and, ultimately weak. As a consequence of his upbringing, Edward was relatively easily controlled by his three most powerful earls. He was never able to fully impose his will on the kingdom and thus his upbringing – and resulting personality - had a fundamental impact on Edward’s overall effectiveness as king.
