Focus Question • How is Media Language used to appeal • to the target audience? • Consider the following: • Message promoted (e.g. people should vote against • George W Bush) • Who is the target audience of the clip? • What representations exist within the clip? (e.g. gangsters, housewives, policeman, politicians etc.) • What type of video is it? (Narrative, performance, concept, animation...) • Features of the clip: costumes, backdrops, makeup, body language, lighting, dancing, close ups, text, hairstyles etc.

Slave 4 U The promoted message that Britney Spears is sending her audience is that women are slaves for men and that they can do whatever they please with women; ‘dance upon me’, and ‘leave behind my name, my age.’ The clip features Britney dressed up in revealing clothing: • She is dancing front andcentre of the clip as many men and a few women dance around her provocatively.

  3. Target Audience • The target audience of the clip would be predominantly men. The clip appears to invite the ‘Male Gaze Theory’ with Britney inviting sexual activity, dancing promiscuously and asking them to ‘dance upon her’.
