John Dickenson wanted to send loyal message to king • Was very polite and asked for • A cease fire at Boston • Repeal of Coercive Acts • Negotiations to establish guarantees of American Rights • Reached London along with the news of the formation of the Continental Army and the battle fought outside Boston • Showed Congresses hope that relations with Britain could be improved The Olive Branch Petition

  3. Colonist lost Breed’s Hill but gave the British massive casualties • Colonist capture of Fort Ticonderoga • Partial success in invading Canada only to have Britain drive Continental Army out • Failed British seize of Charles Town Military Uncertainty

  4. Common Sense had caused more colonist to support war • Rhode Island had declared Independence in May 1776 • In April NC authorized its delegates to vote for Independence • This encouraged other colonies to support separation Change Towards Independence
