  2. Let’s Review: 3rd Conjugation! • 3rd conjugation verbs have –O, -ERE in their dictionary entry. • pono, ponere, posui, positus • mitto, mittere, misi, missus 3

  3. Present Tense3rd Conjugation Verbs • 3rd conjugation verbs have a little “trick” to make their present tense. • pono, ponere, posui, positus • Instead of dropping just the –RE to find the stem, go ahead and drop the –ERE instead! ponere – -ere = pon-

  4. 3rd Conjugation Present Tense Endings Singular Plural 1st person 2nd person 3rd person -o -imus we… I… -is -itis y’all… you… -unt -it they… he/she/it…

  5. pono, ponere: put, place We’ve replaced the –e- before the –re with other vowels, -i and –u. pon pon o imus is pon itis pon pon pon it unt

  6. pono, ponere: put, place Singular imperative: Drop the –re. Plural imperative: Drop the –re, change -e- to –i-, then add -te. pone! put! ponite! put!

  7. Translate!(present tense practice) • 1. Puellalitterasmittit. • 2. Cibum in mensā(table) pono. • 3. Romani non cedunt. • 4. Serve, frumentum in carrum pone! • 5. Servi, aquam in casāponite! • 6. Agricola carrumagit. • 7. Viribonipatriamdefendunt.

  8. Translate!(present tense practice) • 1. Puellalitterasmittit. • The girl sends a letter(s). • 2. Cibum in mensā(table) pono. • I put the food on the table.

  9. Translate!(present tense practice) • 3. Romani non cedunt. • The Romans do not yield. • 4. Serve, cibum in carrum pone! • Slave, put the grain into the cart!

  10. Translate!(present tense practice) • 5. Servi, aquam ad casamponite! • Slaves, carry water to the house! • 6. Agricola carrumagit. • The farmer drives a cart. • 7. Viribonipatriamdefendunt. • Good men defend the/our fatherland.
