  1. Plant Physiology What happens inside the plant!

  2. Plant Taxonomy Monocots Dicots

  3. The Three Areas We Will Look At 1. The plant parts 2. Metabolic processes 3. Growth

  4. Leaf Structure & Function

  5. Cross Section of Pine Needle

  6. Bud Types

  7. Tree Trunk Components

  8. Stomates

  9. Vascular System

  10. Vascular System up close

  11. Modified Stems

  12. Photosynthesis • Requirements for P.S. • -high light intensity • -water • -CO2 • Products of P.S. - food (glucose) - oxygen

  13. Photosynthesis cont. • Occurs only in light

  14. Purpose of Photosynthesis To convert sunlight, water & nutrients into stored energy and carbohydrates.

  15. Respiration Requirements of Respiration -food (sugars, carbo., proteins, fats) -oxygen

  16. Products of Respiration -energy(ATP) -water -CO2 Occurs in light and dark Respiration

  17. The Equation

  18. Source/Sink

  19. Photosynthesis versus Respiration

  20. Is the evaporative loss of water from plants It is the super-highway for nutrient transport Cools the plant Occurs primarily on the lower leaf surface Transpiration

  21. Transpiration and Transport

  22. Root Absorption • Need O2 for uptake • A decrease in P.S. results in a decrease in root absorption • Absorption requires energy

  23. Light -intensity -quality -duration Temperature Water Environmental Factors

  24. Root Interception Roots intercept nutrients as they grow & expand in the soil.

  25. Mass Flow Moving of large volumes of water, with nutrients in the solution, to plant roots

  26. Diffusion Moving of nutrients from areas of higher concentration to equal concentrations in an area.

  27. Flower Parts

  28. Flower Types • Staminate - Contains only stamens (pollen) • Pistillate - Contains only a pistil(s)

  29. Flower Types on Plants • Monoecious - Have male & female flowers, but on same plant. Ex. Corn & Pecans. • Dioecious - Have male & female plants. Ex. Holly

  30. Cross-polliniation • Pollen from on plant is transferred to the stigma of another. • Self-pollination is when the stigma is pollinated by pollen from the same plant.
