THE LINDISFARNE GOSPELS Information for Cool Movers Dance Company
What are they? • Anglo-Saxon Illuminated Manuscript of the Gospels • Kept at Durham Cathedral • Hand made in 700AD by monks on Lindisfarne Island
Where’s Lindisfarne? • It’s a small island off the coast of Northumberland in north east England and it’s called Holy Island these days
More info about the book • It’s written on vellum with quill pens • It contains the four gospels from the New Testament of the Christian Bible.
It’s beautifully decorated • Each gospel has lots of decorated lettering
What are Carpet Pages? • Each of the four gospels is introduced by a fully decorated page that looks a bit like a carpet St Matthew
