  4. What do you think happens when the brain loses oxygen? • Bruises, concussions (from falling down after passing out) • Short term memory loss • Brain damage • Retinal hemorrhaging • Incontinence • Stroke • Cardiac arrest • Brain death • Death

  5. Amazing Brain Facts • The brain weighs about three pounds. • The brain is not fully developed until we are about 25 years old! • The brain is the command center of the body. • The brain has about 100 billion nerve cells called neurons. • The brain generates 25 watts of power – enough to light a bulb. • If we want these messages to travel well so our bodies can work well, we must take very good care of our brains. • Neurons send up to 50,000 messages through the brain per minute. 7. People faint all the time … Why is it a problem? • Fainting – the body’s protective measure • A TEMPORARY loss of consciousness due to a decrease of oxygen and blood for a variety of reasons • running too fast or not eating enough • standing up to fast from lying down • usually symptoms are present beforehand • blurred vision, dizziness, weakness • the body’s way of helping the brain breathe normally again • usually regain consciousness within few moments • Fainting from the Choking Game – • a DELIBERATE shut down of oxygen and blood to the brain • Entire shut down of oxygen and blood, not a slowing process • NOT a protective measure by the body to restore equilibrium • Destroys brain cells

  8. Death could result from… • Cardiac arrest sudden blood surge after blood has been cut off to the brain • Asphyxiationfrom the lack of oxygen to the brain • Fatal injury when individuals lose consciousness (falling)

  11. How can we say “NO”? • USE HUMOR • “No, I need all the brain cells I’ve got.” • GIVE A REASON • “No, it’s stupid and it can kill you.” • WALK AWAY • If others ask you to try it, just leave. • CHANGE THE SUBJECT • Talk about something else..

  12. What can you do at school if… • You know someone who is playing the Choking Game? • Talk to an adult. Who? • Teacher, counselor, nurse, parent volunteer, coach, principal • See someone playing the Choking Game? • Get help from an adult immediately. For example, school nurse.
