The Anti-Apartheid Movement in South Africa • For over 300 years the interaction of African (blacks) and white settlers was one of distrust, violence and hate • From 1948 to 1994 South Africa had a government policy of segregation and discrimination • The struggle of Black South Africans to end apartheid was led by a number of organizations who viewed themselves as liberation movements most notably the African National Congress or ANC • Another group, the Pan-African Congress (PAC) was also formed Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues

The Anti-Apartheid Movement in South Africa • The ANC was led by Nelson Mandela • These groups first started out using peaceful means of protest but by March 1960 they were engaging in violent protests as well • Because of these actions the ANC and PAC were banned by the government but it did not stop the protests and they even had more violent protests • In 1962 Nelson Mandela was arrested and imprisoned • The world started punishing South Africa for its policies Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues

The Anti-Apartheid Movement in South Africa • They were banned from the Olympics and the United Nations and many other world bodies and sports competitions • Eventually South Africa started to change its policies and views • Eventually Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and the ANC was also allowed to officially be an organization again • In 1994 Mandela and the ANC won the first open and free elections that were held in South Africa Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues

Taking Action: Post-Apartheid South Africa • After apartheid the South African government established the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) that helped South Africa deal with its racist past • Many people testified before this commission to describe life under apartheid • This process helped South Africa move beyond apartheid to become a stable country Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues

The War Against the Vietnam War • Pg. 485-brief history of the war and U.S. involvement in Vietnam • One of the main outcomes of the Vietnam war was the involvement of everyday people in voicing their opinions about that conflict • The anti-war movement started slowly • At first it was academics that were opposed to the war • It was not until the implementation of the draft did people start to take action- Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues

The War Against the Vietnam War • Many were opposed to being told that they had to go and fight in a war that they did not believe in • Many tried to avoid the draft by seeking various exemptions based on marital status, educational commitments or physical and mental issues • Others left the U.S. as draft dodgers and went to places like Canada and Sweden • The anti-war movement was in full swing by the late 1960’s and it was characterized by student activism, political engagement, free expression in the counter-culture and the questioning of authority Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues

The War Against the Vietnam War • The daily television reporting of the war was one of the key elements in bringing opposition to the war to the forefront • The nightly viewing of death and destruction became offensive to many Americans • Opposition to the way started in earnest after 1968 and only got louder until the U.S. pulled out of Vietnam Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues

The War Against the Vietnam War • Students for Democratic Society (SDS) became one of the main groups that were focused on demonstrating against the war-Make Love Not War and Burn the card, not people were two of their main slogans • Various U.S. presidents had to deal with the public animosity and finally in 1973 a peace treaty was signed • In April 1975 the last of the U.S. troops left and North Vietnam captured Saigon and in 1976 all of Vietnam became a united communist country Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues

Canada and Afghanistan • Canada has been involved militarily in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban in 2001 • Besides the military operation Canada has tried to be involved in humanitarian assistance • Canada’s mission is due to end in 2011 • Those opposed to the war feel that we can make no difference and that we are in fact causing more resistance against the West and that insurgent groups are getting stronger • There have been some peace rallies across Canada Program of Studies: 4.8-Evaluate the extent to which ideology should shape responses to contemporary issues
