  1. Study Skills Mrs. Arguello Language arts

  2. Achiever Fever Survey • To help me study or do homework, I always… • Write my assignments in an agenda or assignment pad. • Take study breaks every 30 minutes. • Turn off the TV and other distractions. • Tackle the tough assignments early in the evening. • Have the number of a study buddy from class. • Study for a test several days in advance. • Do my homework on time.

  3. Achiever Fever Survey • What is your study skill, one good habit you always follow when you study? You are an expert at this skill. • Find someone in the classroom who is an expert at a different skill. • When the classroom lights go off, you must freeze– no talking, no moving.

  4. Achiever Fever Survey • In two minutes, explain to your partner how you use this study skill. What do you do to make this skill effective for you? • The person to whom you are speaking may not talk. • When the classroom lights go off, you must freeze– no talking, no moving.

  5. Study Skills Pre Test • I should write down every homework assignment in my agenda, even if I am sure I will remember it. • If I have an important test on Friday, I should study for that test for several hours on Thursday night. • Studying for a test or completing a big homework assignment is more important than getting a good night’s sleep. • When I am studying, I should take a break every hour. • When I have several homework assignments, I should start with the easiest to get it out of the way.

  6. Study Skills Pre Test • It is easier to do assignments on time than to catch up when I fall behind. • It’s okay not to do a homework assignment if I know the material already. • If I study or concentrate on homework better in the morning, then I should schedule time to do some of my work before school rather than in the evening. • It is okay to study or do homework in front of the television if the TV does not distract me. • If my little brother likes to bother me while I do my homework, I should talk to my parent about ways to stop this from happening. • If I am comfortable there, my bed is the best place to study or do homework.

  7. Study Skills Studying is easy if you follow these three tips: • Get organized! • Get motivated! • Find a good study location!

  8. Study Skills • Tip #1: Get Organized! • Write down all homeworkand due dates in your agenda. • Write down when tests are scheduled and projects are due. • Don’t let deadlines sneak up on you. • Check off completed assignments. • Write down special instructions that your teacher gives. • Ask questions when you are confused or unclear about something. • Keep a separate folder for each subject . • Keep your notes and homework in date order.

  9. Study Skills • Good Idea! Schedule time to study. • Make a weekly schedule that includes time for studying and homework as well as activities and fun. • Plan short study sessions. • Take study breaks.

  10. Study Skills • Good Idea! Schedule time to study. • Have study times throughout the week. Don’t try to do it all in one night. • Study during times that work best for you. Choose times when you study best. • Plan your days and weeks so that you get plenty of sleep each night. You will concentrate better and be more successful after a full night’s sleep.

  11. Study Skills Tip #2: Get Motivated! • Always try to do your best. Doing well in school can give you a great deal of pride and satisfaction. • Pay attention and listen in class. To not pay attention is a waste of time. • Remember, learning new things can be fun. Even if you are not interested in what you are learning right now, the next thing could be very interesting to you.

  12. Study Skills Ways to stay motivated: • Set goals. • Study in short sessions. • You remember more if you spread out your study periods rather than cram. • Begin with the hardest item first. • Get it done so that it won’t hang over your head. • Leave yourself plenty of time to do a good job. • Make hard work a habit. It is easier to keep up with your work than to catch up when you fall behind.

  13. Study Skills Homework Part 1

  14. Study Skills Homework Part 1 • Create a study schedule for next week. • THIS IS A PLAN FOR HOW YOU WILL STUDY AND COMPLETE YOUR HOMEWORK NEXT WEEK. • Fill in every square. Start with your commitments like sports practices and other activities. • Include time for regular activities like eating dinner. • Schedule adequate time each night for studying and doing homework in all of your classes. Specify, for example, when you will do your math homework. • Use the tips in your notes to help you create the best study schedule for you.

  15. Study Skills • Tip #3: Find a good study location. Find a good place to study. • Make sure your study location is free of distractions, things that cause you to lose concentration. • Never, never study while watching television. • If you must study while listening to music, make sure that the songs have no words. Have good lighting. • Do not strain your eyes to see. Have all of your supplies available. • Supplies to have available: Study where you are comfortable. • The best place to study is sitting up straight at a desk or table. • Make sure that you have enough space to spread out your supplies. Ask your parent/guardian for help. • If you have trouble finding a good place to study, talk to your parent/guardian.
