  10. EPA’s National-Level Activities Several Approaches • Managing voluntary greenhouse gas emissions programs • Participating in U.S. Climate Change Science Program • Initiating the development of regulations involving greenhouse gases • Developing the National Water Program Strategy: Response to Climate Change

  11. EPA Voluntary Programs Related to Climate Change

  12. EPA’s National-Level Activities National Water Program Strategy: Response to Climate Change • Describes potential effects of climate change on clean water, drinking water, and ocean protection programs • Identifies actions that water managers can take to help adapt their programs to climate change and to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions • Strategy document is available at: http://www.epa.gov/water/climatechange

  13. National Water Program Strategy: Response to Climate Change Expectations Impacting Water Resources • Shorelines to move as a result of sea level rise • Changes in ocean chemistry to alter aquatic habitat and fisheries • Warming water temperatures to change contaminant concentrations in water and alter aquatic system uses • New patterns of precipitation to alter water supply for drinking/other uses and to change pollution levels in aquatic systems • More intense storms to threaten water infrastructure and increase polluted storm water runoff

  14. National Water Program Strategy: Response to Climate Change Strategy has identified five goals: • Water program mitigation of greenhouse gases • Water program adaptation to climate change • Climate change research related to water • Water program education on climate change • Water program management of climate change
