History of AI… • Significant AI strides dates back from 1993 in OECD countries. • Where implemented in OECD countries, it has proven to contribute to 10 percent of growth in GDP. • This has led to tech giants like Google and Baidu to spent $20 billion to $30 billion on AI in 2016, with 90 percent of this spent on R&D and deployment, and 10 percent on AI acquisitions (McKinsey, 2017). • Of significance the Southeast Asian nations have significantly adopted AI compared to other countries (ITIF, 2018). • OECD countries have used AI vastly in the manufacturing industries where the AI robots perform the manual tasks more efficiently than humans thus increasing productivity and competitiveness economy wide (ITIF, 2018). • From manufacturing industries it has developed to the public sector where it has reduced poverty and improved education, and to improved healthcare. Where are we presently? • Smart robotics and self driven cars: • “20 countries are now ready for driverless cars, this is as a result of government support, infrastructure, innovation and consumer acceptance (KPMG,2018)” • “Between 2018 and 2021, it is estimated that 2.1 million IA robots will be installed around the world” • Virtual agents: • “In 2019, more companies are investing in virtual agents to engage with customers” • “Amazon Go in Seattle, allows for shoppers to take goods off shelves without seeing a cashier.” • Natural language processing: • “66.6 million Americans will be using voice recognition in 2019”. • “Sony, Hisense has unveiled TV’s which are controlled by a voice”.   11. Impact of AI in the future? • AI can deliver real value to a serious adopter: for those adopted early it means they will have a competitive advantage with the laggards. (McKinsey, 2017) • It is projected that at 2020 the AI market will reach $70 billion dollars: this is 10 months away. This will be the new disruption especially on the workforce. The shape of the future workforce? • The workforce will need to join the global competition to attract AI talent and investment this is because, • It is predicted that by 2030, as many as 800 million jobs could be lost worldwide to AI automation. • Secondly, seventy-five million to 375 million may need to switch occupational categories and learn new skills. Lessons and recommendations: • According to PwC, 72% of business leaders believe AI will be the business advantage of the future – thus it is important to invest in it and this therefore says that.. • Future Leaders when considering future of work should aim to study on the following jobs: • Computer Programmers, Software Developers, Info Security Analysts. • Engineering Jobs on Robotics, Nanotechnology and Materials. • Healthcare providers. • The global labour productivity growth, has slowed in recent years and one of the important technologies to reverse the productivity slowdown going forward is AI robotics.
