  1. Acquisition of an Ultrahigh Vacuum Scanning Tunneling MicroscopeHani Elsayed-Ali, Old Dominion University DMR-0420304 An ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was acquired. This surface imaging capability enables multi-disciplinary reseach in areas that include electronic-induced structural modification of surfaces; nucleation and growth of thin films, nanocrystals and quantum dot fabrication by pulsed laser depostion; and morphology studies for controlled synthesis of carbon nanotubes. The STM allows for in situ laser interaction with the surface. Graduate students and postdocs are using the STM to perform their research and gain training in thin film growth, surface modification, surface and nanocrystal characterization, and UHV technology. This instrument is used to highlight to the students the importance of relating atomic scale materials characteristics to macroscopic properties, and the importance of surface properties in microelectronic fabrication, polymer characterization, and nanotechnology.
