CHAPTER 9 Progressivism & CONSTRCUTIVISM
<Name of your Invention> • Progressivists believe that individuality, progress, and change are fundamental to one's education. Believing that people learn best from what they consider most relevant to their lives, progressivistscenter their curricula on the needs, experiences, interests, and abilities of students. Progressivistteachers try making school interesting and useful by planning lessons that provoke curiosity • Leadership is an aspect of employees in an organization want to feel that they are part of something bigger and better. A progressive leader with a generous spirit understands this need and connects the dots for people. Generously sharing ideas, expertise, and knowledge aids employees in giving their personal best for the company as a whole.
“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” JOHN DEWEY
Invention Materials • Materials used for final invention build • Why did you choose those materials?
Progressivistsview teachers as a facilitator in the classroom. As the facilitator, the teacher directs the students learning, but the students voice is just as important as that of the teacher. For this reason, progressive education is often equated with student-centered instruction. Example: Astudent may be able to recite the different parts of a cell without truly understanding how a cell functions. Progressive learning uses integrated curricula to allow students to approach concepts and content from multiple perspectives, deepening their conceptual understanding of a subject.
