Andy Walton’sWeekly World Watch March 25 - 31 2007 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.” Ezekiel 33:6

  2. What is this world watch all about? I decided each week to look at key events that had happened in that week and look at them with the Bible in hand. I hope to build up a picture of Gods hand working in the affairs of this world bringing about that day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle which will be brought to end when the Lord Jesus Christ physically returns from heaven to set up Gods kingdom. The key areas which will crop up time and again will be • Israel – Middle East the growing conflict • Europe – the developing union / political and religious • Russia – continued turning back to anti west ways • The development of King of South – US & UK • Declining moral standards and increasing violence.   3. Weekly Developments These are just a few of the events that have caught my eye in the previous week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Bible viewpoint. Headlines These are always headlines printed in the newspaper – the date is always given and which paper. Normally the Daily Telegraph. (DT) Event This is usually the newspapers take on the events that have happened. It will always be a direct quote from the newspaper. Comment This is my take on why it is interesting from a Bible point of view. The idea of this weekly world watch is to give a quick Biblical perspective without going into detail. If more detail is needed please email me. Bible Quote This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context.

Click this blue text to see!] Headline Smiles but EU's party can't hide divisions Headline Sunday Telegraph March 25 Event European leaders began a 50th birthday party for the EU with pomp and pop music last night, feasting on braised ox as they finalised a declaration on the future of the continent. But the strains of Beethoven's Fifth, played to welcomed them to Berlin, could not disguise the politically discordant notes that threatened to overshadow the celebrations to mark five decades of integration. In the corridors of the German President's Bellevue Palace, where Tony Blair and other leaders were enjoying an "Organic-Teutonic" banquet, a row was brewing over claims that the hosts want to move too fast to revive the European constitution. Comment In 1957, 6 nations (including France and W.Germany) formed the EEC. It has developed into today’s European Union of 27 nations! 493 million people, one currency, a parliament, a bank, a court and a council. The only world wars have been centred on Europe and so after World War II the impetus was there to unite Europe. Europe has always tried to unite though over the millennia. But this is the last project. It is a political and ‘Christian’ project based on Babel. God split up the people in Babel confusing their language. The different nations were then formed. Europe is trying to unite nations that God divided. They will not succeed. Daniel and Revelation make clear that they remain divided as nations but united in common purpose against God and his people. God will judge this “beast” that man has created. Bible Quote Daniel 2 41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided 43 they shall not cleave one to another

Sailors paraded on Iranian TV Headline Sailor captives paraded on TV Headline Daily Telegraph March 30 Event The release of film of Faye Turney, the captive Royal Navy rating, caused outrage last night after she appeared to be speaking under duress as she apologised for straying into Iranian waters. Footage of Ldg Seaman Turney and several other British prisoners were beamed around the world showing the distressed looking sailor in a black hijab headscarf. Comment Britain froze all official business with Iran this week. Tony Blair is furious and has condemned the detention of the 15 British service personnel by Iran. On Thursday the UK asked UN Security Council members to say they “deplored” the continuing detention of its naval personnel and to back calls for their “immediate release”. But the council was divided on the issue, with Russia leading opposition to Britain’s demand for a tough stance against Iran! Interesting cartoon in the Daily Telegraph this week, showing a lion with a knot in his tail with the president of Iran hiding behind a tree grinning. (see picture above). Britain’s symbol is a lion. It is in the Bible too. Britain is the “old lion” with the “young lions” being those nations that are offspring. E.g. USA, Canada, Australia. This event only adds to the incredible tension now between Iran and the US and UK. And so the drums of war beat ever louder. Iran (ancient Medes) is being stirred up. Russia is supporting Iran. The UK and USA are standing together. Conflict is close… Bible Quote Nahum 2 1 ¶ Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid? Nahum about the burden of Nineveh (in Iraq) – the lions dwell there!

US navy starts war games in the gulf Headline US navy starts war games in the Gulf Headline Daily Telegraph March 28 Event The US navy sent a warning signal to Iran yesterday as it announced that it had begun the largest demonstration of force in the Persian Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Two aircraft carriers are leading military exercises which involve 10,000 personnel and more than 100 warplanes flying simulated attack manoeuvres off the coast of Iran. The war games bring together the strike groups of the USS John Stennis and the USS Dwight Eisenhower. The exercises will considerably raise the stakes in the stand-off over Iran's capture of 15 British sailors and Marines in the disputed Shatt al-Arab waterway between Iran and Iraq on Friday. Tensions are already running high because of Teheran's nuclear programme. Comment Military sources note that this exercise was launched March 27 the day before the Arab League summit opened in Riyadh (see next slides), to demonstrate the Bush administration’s determination not to let Iran block oil exports from the Persian Gulf, or continue its nuclear program. With Iran one week into war games, military tensions in the Gulf region are skyrocketing and boosting world oil prices. It is interesting that the focus is moving from Iraq to Iran. From the gold to the silver. From the lion to the bear. Could we be seeing a latter-day fulfilment of Daniel 7? If so Iran might “devour much flesh”. We know Iran will invade Israel with Gog. Bible Quote Daniel 7 5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. The bear = Medes / Persians

Saudis: Accept peace plan or face war Headline Accept peace plan or face war, Israel told Headline Daily Telegraph March 28 Event The "lords of war" will decide Israel's future if it rejects a blueprint for peace crafted by the entire Arab world, Saudi Arabia's veteran foreign minister warned yesterday. As leaders began gathering in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, for today's summit of the Arab League, Prince Saud al-Faisal told The Daily Telegraph that the Middle East risks perpetual conflict if the peace plan fails. Speaking inside his whitewashed palace, surrounded by luxuriant lawns and manicured flower beds resembling a green oasis in the drabness of Riyadh, Prince Saud delivered an unequivocal warning to Israel. "If Israel refuses, that means it doesn't want peace and it places everything back into the hands of fate. They will be putting their future not in the hands of the peacemakers but in the hands of the lords of war," he said. Comment And so Israel has before it an ultimatum from the Arab nations. Accept our plan (covered in next slide) and there will be peace. Do not accept it and there shall be war. These words came from Saudi Arabia – American ally. So what is happening here? Well Saudi Arabia has decided to play a more assertive role in Middle Eastern diplomacy. It has watched the menacing spectre of Iran loom large in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is not happy with this. Therefore it now also pressures Israel into accepting their peace plan. Notice though that this was all said in a “whitewashed palace”. From the outside it looks peaceful and plausible – inside is deceit, death and destruction. Bible Quote Matthew 23 27 for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.

Arabs “hand of peace” to Israel Headline Arabs offer the 'hand of peace' to Israel Headline Daily Telegraph March 30 Event The Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, offered Israel the "hand of peace" yesterday as every Arab country pledged to recognise the Jewish state if it returns all land captured in the war of 1967. This once-dormant peace plan was revived at a summit of the Arab League in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. All 22 Arab states formally adopted the blueprint as a means of normalising ties with Israel and ending the Middle East conflict. Mr Abbas, president of the Palestinian Authority, told Arab leaders in the marbled splendour of the King Abdul-Aziz conference centre that this was an historic moment. Comment This truly was an historic moment. The Arab league began in 1945 with 7 nations. It now has 22 nations – in fact every single Arab nation. In 1948 it was the Arab league nations that declared war against the newly formed state of Israel. And now every single Arab nation has declared that if Israel withdraws to the pre 1967 lines and allow the creation of a Palestinian State covering the West Bank, Gaza with East Jerusalem as its capital then it would be declared that the Arab – Israeli conflict was over. As we saw in the previous slide this is now an ultimatum. Accept this offer of “peace” or there will be war. America has welcomed this plan. So what has Israel’s response been? Well surprisingly they have given it a guarded welcome albeit with some reservations - not about the land - but about the return of refugees. Will we soon here a cry of peace and safety? Or have we just heard it? Bible Quote 1 Thessalonians 5 3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child;

Moscow predicts war April 6th Headline Moscow predicts war on Iran April 6th Headline Debkafile / Intelligence Daily March 26 Event US financial sources in Bahrain report Americans in Bahrain have been advised to pack up business operations and leave. The advice came from officers with US Central Command 5th Fleet HQ at Manama, who spoke of security tension, a hint at an approaching war with Iran. Arab sources report the positioning of a Patriot anti-missile battery in Bahrain this week; they say occupancy at emirate hotels has soared past 90% due mostly to the influx of US military personnel. They also report Western media crews normally employed in military coverage are arriving in packs. The USS Nimitz will be departing on April 2, to join the John C. Stennis Strike Group in the Persian Gulf. The nuclear carrier is due to relieve the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower , but military sources in the Gulf believe all three US carriers will stay put if tensions continue to climb or if fighting breaks out . Earlier, DEBKAfile quoted intelligence sources in Moscow as predicting that a US strike against Iranian nuclear installations codenamed Operation Bite has been scheduled for April 6 at 0040 hours. Missiles and air raids will conduct strikes designed to be devastating enough to set Tehran’s nuclear program several years back. Comment This prediction of the war on Iran beginning Friday 6th April may well be false. What is true though is that Russian military sources have started the rumour. Russia is trying to bring about an emergency session of the UN to deal with the obvious preparations for war against Iran. This week has seen talk of peace and steps to war.
