  1. Gears Lab 6 Autumn Quarter

  2. Before we begin… • Pre-assembled Lego materials SHOULD NOT be taken apart. • Lego Gripper, Steering Assembly, Differential Assembly • Disassembling any of the pre-assembled examples will result in a 10-point deduction on your lab report grade. • Follow directions! Only take objects apart when told to and when you have put them together to begin with. Autumn Quarter

  3. Gear: Definition • A gear is a wheel with teeth along its rim. • It is used to transmit effort from one shaft to another. Autumn Quarter

  4. Gear Train • Combination of two or more meshed gears. Used to change the rate of rotation, the direction of rotation, and the amount of torque. Autumn Quarter

  5. Gear Ratio • Gear ratio is also called “Mechanical Advantage” Autumn Quarter

  6. Types of Gears • Spur gears • Worm gear • Rack and pinion • Bevel gears Autumn Quarter

  7. Spur Gears • Simplest • Most widely used in Instrumentation and Control Systems • Used to drive parallel shafts Autumn Quarter

  8. Spur Gear Terminology • Pitch circle diameters • Size of teeth (Diametral pitch) • Center distance • Number of teeth • Pinion • Gear Autumn Quarter

  9. Worm Gears • Used to change speed and direction of rotation. • Used for connecting skew shafts (usually 90 degrees) • High gear ratios. • Higher load capacity. Autumn Quarter

  10. Rack and Pinion • Used to convert rotational motion into linear motion, or vice-versa. Autumn Quarter

  11. Bevel Gears • Used for intersecting shafts. • Most transmissions occur at right angles but shaft angles can be any value. Autumn Quarter

  12. Sprockets • Gears are connected by a chain instead of directly. • The input and output shaft rotations are in the same direction. Autumn Quarter

  13. Today’s Lab: • Window Lift Motor • Lego Robot Gripper • Gears at Table • Build Gearbox • Bicycle Gears Autumn Quarter
