What is a Residential Planner? • Someone who understands the principles and elements of design and is able to incorporate those theories into their career as design consultant, professional organizer, home stager, window treatment designer, kitchen and bath planner and architectural drafter, or AutoCAD draftsperson among other career opportunities.

What does the Residential Planning student learn? • The Residential Diploma program provides a hands-on educational approach in order to develop student’s strengths in basic residential design skills. • Students will learn the importance of hand-drafting and computer-generated drafting as essential means of communication with clients. • Emphasis is also put on developing strong written communication skills and professional presentation techniques. • Students will learn to coordinate fabrics and colors in conjunction with the principles and elements of design to create an attractive and functional solution for residential spaces.
Description of a Residential Planner • Residential Planning is an exciting field that is different from interior design. • Residential Planning prepares students to work in the following specific fields of sales, model home decorating, closet space planning, design consultant, home staging and more. • Students completing Residential Planning Diploma who wish to sit for the NCIDQ Exam are encouraged to matriculate into the Interior Design Bachelor Degree Program where, upon completion of that degree, they will be eligible to take the exam. • Students will be prepared only to work in the field of Residential Planning. • Residential Planners differ from interior designers in that interior designers may work in any field of design including, commercial, hospitality, environmental, healthcare and other areas that require extensive knowledge of codes, ADA guidelines, and construction methodologies. Residential Planners are free to explore more aesthetic aspects of their field. Home organizers, and kitchen and bath specialists are both examples of growing fields for Residential Planners. • The Residential Planning program is a stimulating and rigorous curriculum which will challenge you professionally. • This is a diploma program that does require good computer and communication skills.
What does a student need in order to Succeed? • A PC computer (Absolutely NO MACS!) • Digital Camera • Printer • Scanner • Adobe Photoshop • AutoCAD • Sketchup • Acrobat • Must have all textbooks, software and supplies by Day 1 of class.
What to Expect in the Classroom • Students will be required to participate in class by posting substantive feedback to peers 4 of 7 days per week. • Students will be expected to meet the posted deadlines for their assignments. • Students can anticipate spending 10 – 25 hours per week on reading and assignments. • 5 1/2 week courses mean a fast paced learning environment.
How students Can Succeed in RP • ID124- Digital Visualization for Interior Designers • FND-Drawing • FND-Color Theory • ID 120 –Basic Drafting • ID 121 Basics of Interior Design • ID 133 Space Planning • ID 220 Kitchen and Bath Design • ID 210 History of Furniture . • ID 221 Introduction to AutoCAD • ID 250 Residential Design Studio • Must be prepared for technology and have entry level Photoshop skills. • Must have tools, and be able to give whole-hearted attempt at drawing. Remember the Drawing Learning Tutoring Center is available to help students with this course at no additional charge.. • Students must have Photoshop software and some entry level skills. Help is available to all students through the Photoshop Learning Tutoring Center. • Students need to begin class armed with the necessary equipment, software, scanner and time to devote to learning the skills presented in this course. Additional help is available in the Drawing Learning Tutoring Center. • Camera, scanner and text books are mandatory right from the start for this class. Being able to utilize the drafting skills from ID120 is also essential along with the time to devote to the successful completion of the assignments. • Must have strong drafting skills and ability to read and follow directions. Good time management skills are important in all courses in the program. • Must be able to apply the space planning and AutoCAD skills learned in the pre-requisite courses in order to succeed. • Need Photoshop,PowerPoint and drawing skills. Must be able to put research into own words and have good written communication skills. Sketching is required for this class. • Students absolutely must have their software and textbooks on the first day of class in order to succeed. Additional help is available through the free AutoCAD Learning Tutoring Center. • Strong AutoCAD skills are needed to do well in this important class. Time management and the ability to read and follow directions are also key to succeeding in ID250. It is imperative that students ask questions early and stay current with the assignments since this is a pivotal course in the program.

FAQ’s • What is the difference between ID and RP? ID is a bachelors degree requiring students to study in depth design theories including codes, construction documents, LEED, commercial and residential design. Residential Planning is a self-enrichment diploma program focusing on residential aspects of design but not to the point of qualifying for any certifications. • What if I have little or no computer skills? To keep pace with your classmates and make the most of your education through AiP-OD, you will need to have a strong grasp of the basic computer skills listed in your courses. Because our courses are concentrated, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the software BEFORE class begins. That way you’ll be able to move quickly into the basic applications of software tools while you learn to solve the types of problems you’ll encounter in this profession. • Can I succeed in this class with little or no computer skills? No! It may be impossible for you to become successful in this program if you do not have strong basic computer skills and have not prepared in advance to acquire a working knowledge of the specific software you’ll use in your courses. • Will I need to buy a textbook for every class? YES! You need to have your textbooks, software, equipment and supplies ready to go by Day 1 of each session. It is better for you if you can order them early have a chance to review everything prior to the start of class. There is no way for you to be successful if you do not have everything that is required for a course.
FAQs • Why do I need to learn to draft? Drafting teaches you about dimensioning and details, clearances and dimensional thinking. It also teaches you about discipline and detail. • Can I pass drafting class without getting all the supplies? Ask yourself one simple question – Would you go to a surgeon who used a butter knife to do your operation? You must have everything listed for the course in order to pass this course. Investing in a portable drafting board is a cost effective and portable option for this class. Because of the nature of these courses and their fast pace, you’ll want to plan ahead for every class and be prepared with the textbooks, materials , software and hardware on the very first day of every course. • Why do I need Photoshop? Photoshop is used in most of the courses you’ll take in pursuit of your education at AiP-OD. You will enjoy mastering Photoshop in ID124. • Why do I need to know how to draw to be a Residential Planner? Many designs are initiated on a napkin over dinner or lunch. Sketching is the designer’s way of transferring the ideas into the tangible for others to understand more clearly. • What does it take to become an Interior Designer? In order to be an interior designer, there are a minimum number of hours of secondary education required in the field of interior design. • What do I need to do to join ASID ( American Society of Interior Designers) Student Chapter? – because there is a minimum formal educational requirement that the Residential Planning Program does not meet, only bachelor degree seeking students are eligible for ASID membership. It is possible to matriculate into the Interior Design Program from the RP program if you choose.
