  2. AGENDA Information: • Welcome to all parents of students in grade 9/10 ISP. 2. Updates: • Course selection for current grade 9 ISP students - presentation in Auditorium - Thurs. Feb 21 - 830am • Course selections for current grade 10 ISP students has already been done. 3. Outside Presentation: Homestay for International Students 4. ESU (Enrichment Studies Unit) - Queens University 5. Options for September 2013 - for both grade 9 and 10 parents regarding next year and what it will look like for your son/daughter in 10 ISP or Year 1 IB. Next meeting is on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 - 630 to 730pm - Location TBA

  3. Organization: What is the IB mission? The IB is a not-for-profit foundation, motivated by its educational mission, focused on the student. The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. “The world in which you were born is just one model of reality. Other cultures are not failed attempts at being you: they are unique manifestations of the human spirit.” ~Wade Davis

  4. The Diploma Model *NEW* Contents: What does the Diploma Programme curriculum contain? The curriculum contains six subject groups and a core of three parts. • Curriculum Model begins in Grade 11 and ends in 12 • Students must complete in a consecutive two year timeline • Diploma Requirements include: • Students take at least one area of study from each group • Group 6 may be extracted for a second choice in groups 2-5 • Cannot fail a course (level 1) • Must achieve a minimum of 24 points including 3 bonus • Must complete and submit Core (CAS, EE and TOK)

Higher (HL) vs. Standard Level (SL) • Each student MUST select a minimum of 3 HL and 3 SL courses • Their selection should match their intended University pathway • Higher Level • 240 Hours studying the curriculum in more depth (not necessarily harder….just digging deeper…insert debate here. • Usually 3 semesters of the four in Grades 11 and 12 • Internal Assessments often the same as the SL course • Final Examination has an extra paper which will focus on the extra optional units • Students can take four if it fits their schedule • Students can NOT write a HL exam in their Grade 11 year • Standard Level • 150 Hours studying the curriculum, usually 2 semesters • Final Examination can be taken in Grade 11 or 12 (Anticipated vs. Diploma)

Who is it for and what are the benefits to my child? • University Preparation Program • Studies have been and are being published of the success rates of IB Students once they enter University • Internationally Written Curriculum • Students will be exposed to curriculum that connects them to Global Education • Transferable to 130 Countries and University Acceptance • Internationally recognized and widely thought of as a quality controlled and dynamic curriculum • Transfer Credit • Students can apply for University credit based on their results in IB examinations • Two Diplomas = 2 different academic scores to apply for your university program of choice.

ESU - Enrichment Studies Unit - Queen’s University • For over 25 years, we have been offering our flagship program: the Enrichment Mini-Course (or EMC) program. • Previously known as E=mc2, this program for high school students is offered in one week, running from Sunday evening to Friday at noon. • Both local students and distant students attend the same week and learn together in high quality academic courses taught by graduate students and other professionals. • Typically, this program appeals to students in grades 9, 10 and 11 evenly, with only a few grade 12 students. • May 5th to 10th, 2013 • Summer Program as well - August ESU YouTube Video ESU High School Programs

  10. What will a grade 10 ISP timetable look like? • It will include all the required courses for grade 10 and your OSSD • (with a bonus) • It will include courses to prepare you for IB • It has some flexibility for YOUR choices

  11. Grade 10: Sample Timetable *Careers/Civics - students who take the IBDP in grade 11/12 can request a credit substitution from the principal to replace this course. Students who drop out of the IBDP or choose not to take IB in grade 11 will have to complete this diploma requirement. Page 11

  12. What if I don’t want French in IB? Students who choose to take Spanish as their Group 2 (second language) in IB will choose another elective credit in grade 10.

  13. When I start IB, which courses will I be able to choose? Group 1 – English HL Group 2 – French SL - Spanish ab initio Group 3 – History HL or SL - ITGS SL Group 4 – Biology HL or SL - Chemistry HL or SL - Physics SL Group 5 – Math HL or SL or Mathematical Studies

  14. IB Assessment in Ontario- students receive both their OSSD and IB Diploma RED = extra credit given to HL student / ** repeat credit from grade 10

  15. Sample Time Table for 2013 to 2015 Note: Timetable would change if Spanish was your choice over 2 years. Spanish ab initio must be taught over 2 school years and your exam would be in May 2015 Note: This timetable can change after student selections have been submitted.

  16. What is the advantage of having an IB and an OSSD? • Universities can admit you to their programs based on which marks are best for you. • Universities can give you up to 3 advanced standing credits before you even get to university. • Some universities will give you advanced standing and allow you direct entry to your second year of university. • You will be prepared for the challenges of university.
