  1. Computers A technology of change

  2. Computer Technology • Everyone needs to know the components of the equipment you will be using

  3. Hardware • Anything physical • That you can touch

  4. Identify Computer Hardware • Important to know and understand the equipment you will be using • This class uses the DOS based Personal Computer platform

  5. The Computer Tower Also referred to as the CPU Floppy Drive Power Switch Compact Disk Player Or CD-ROM Chassis

  6. CPU • Central Processing Unit • The intelligence of the computer • All processing occurs within the CPU

  7. Inside the Chassis Where the processing components are housed

  8. CPU Circuitry • Silicon chips • Contain miniaturized circuitry • Placed on boards • Plugged into slits • Within the CPU • Process instructions given to the computer

  9. Memory • ROM • Read Only Memory • Built into computer • Non-volatile (permanent) • RAM • Random Access Memory • Memory chips • Volatile – can be changed • Temporary while working

  10. Memory – RAM • Random Access Memory

  11. Hard Drive • The memory storage bank for the computer • Software and data stored on it • Size of memory storage is measured in: • Megabytes • Gigabytes

  12. Hard Drives

  13. Processing Cards • Mini-processing chips and circuits • Each performs a special and unique function • Video Card • Audio Card • Modem • Ethernet Card • Device Manager • Etc.

  14. Processing Cards • Many Types Video, Audio, Modem, Ethernet, Etc.

  15. Peripherals • Hardware • Anything external (outside of) the chassis/CPU • Many types of functions and equipment

  16. Peripherals • Anything outside of the Chassis

  17. Two Types • There are two types of peripherals • Input • User sends data to the computer • User gets data and/or information from the computer • Output • Called I/O • In/Out

  18. I/O • Input and Output Devices Input Output

  19. Input Devices Any Device that the operator uses to put data into the computer

  20. Keyboard • Input device for individual characters and commands • Alpha, numeric, symbols, functions

  21. Mouse Input device that inputs data easier than keyboard commands

  22. Digitizer

  23. Floppy Drive Portable Storage Devices • Either Input or Output • Save and transfer data and/or information between computer and portable storage device • Uses a corresponding disk drive

  24. Floppy Drive & Disks

  25. Zip Drive & Disk

  26. CD Drive & Disk

  27. Thumb Drive & USB Port

  28. Image/Data Capture • Input devices that capture data and/or images • Programmed to transfer the data directly into the computer

  29. Scanner

  30. Camera

  31. Barcode Reader

  32. TV & VCR

  33. Sound Capture • Devices that capture sound from an external source (peripheral) • Then transfer that sound as a digital file into the computer

  34. Microphone

  35. MIDI Devices

  36. Miscellaneous Input Devices • There are a broad range of other input devices • Just a few are shown here • Perhaps you can think of something else?

  37. Game Tools

  38. Handheld Computers

  39. Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

  40. Output Devices All hardware that the operator uses to download information

  41. Monitor • Looks like a television screen • Displays information • Of a program • Text being input at keyboard • Quality and size vary

  42. Televisions • Output images and sound • Similar to monitors

  43. Printer • When you create a document in a program • It is a Soft Copy • If you want a Hard Copy • You need to print it • Printers output your information onto paper

  44. Printer

  45. Speakers • Speakers are sound output devices • Quality and size vary greatly

  46. Projectors • Projectors output video and sound • Send images to an external screen

  47. Portable Storage Media Both I and O

  48. Handheld Computers Both I and O

  49. Assignment • Find a computer outside of this classroom • State what computer it is and where you found it • Classify it as new, moderately new or outdated • List all of the peripheral devices on that computer • Classify them as Input or Output
