Advanced integration and analysis tools for transit GIS data, showcasing the significant improvements made in the availability and quality of transit data over recent years. By employing tools like GTFS for data exchange and effective map matching methods, we outline how to integrate detailed transit data into Multi-Modal Planning Organizations (MPO) models. Moreover, we discuss spatial analysis tools that leverage GDAL to streamline transit network performance assessments, enhancing the accuracy of catchment area analyses and accessibility studies.

  3. introduction • The availability and quality of transit data has greatly improved in recent years. • Transit agencies maintain detailed transit data, but it is typically not integrated into MPO models or the other way… • GTFS introduced a common data exchange platform for transit data... • No direct integration with the street network • No integrated analysis tools are available All of this data requires integration to be useful for planning...

  4. Map matching • Tool for integration of transit line geometries with any given street network.. • Works by matching a given sequence of coordinates to a target link/polyline geometry within a given snap radius Target street network Source transit line geometry

  5. Map matching • Most likely link sequence is based on weighted score of length and snap distance with two calculation variants… • Incremental matching method – for dense point sequences • Global matching method – for sparse point matching

  6. Map matching • Useful in matching inaccurate geometries…

  7. Map matching • Search graph can be restricted to a specific mode in the network… • Particularly useful in matching multi-modal networks

  8. Map matching in the real world • Integrated street and transit network for Oregon State DOT 33 Transit Agencies 1221 Line Routes 5 Modes 1.5 Million Links in Street Network

  9. Map matching data transferred • All transit lines, stop pointsand timetables including calendar restrictions…

  10. Integrated supply demand analysis • Streamlined interaction with regional travel demand model data • Integrated modeling of actual transit fleet • Integrated modeling of fares and revenue based on ridership data from demand models ** **Scherr. W, Fisher. I "Regional Application of 24-Hour Dynamic Transit Assignment", 12th TRB Transportation Planning Application Conference, Houston TX, May 2009

  11. Spatial analysis tools • Written in GDAL… • GDAL or Geospatial Data Abstraction Library is an open source library that can be used for manipulating geospatial raster data and for manipulating geospatial vector data. • It is offered on multiple platforms including python and includes powerful geo-processing functionality.
