  1. Present Tense VerbsYO & TÚI & YOU

  2. Academic VocabInfinitive: The base form of a verb. When translated, it always includes “TO” + the action.Hablar – To talkCorrer – To run

  3. Verbs in Spanish end in “AR”, “ER”, or “IR.” For example, think back to when we talked about activities we enjoyed. We always added an infinitiveafter “Me gusta.”Me gustahablarporteléfono. I like to talk on the phone

  4. Academic VocabConjugate: To break down a verb infinitive into each subject form. In English, you would conjugate TO TALK as: I talk, you talk, he/she talks, we talk, they talk.

  5. Verbs in Spanish end in “AR”, “ER”, or “IR.” When you conjugate a verb in Spanish, you add a new verbending to the verb stem.

  6. HABLAR Stem: the part of the verb that does not change when you add the verb ending.

  7. For “regular” verbs without any spelling changes, you express the subject “I” by dropping the last two letters (AR) and replacing them with an “o,” the verb ending for “YO.”

  8. Start with the infinitive: Now, drop the “AR” To talk YO HABL AR O And replace it with an “O” Yohablo = I talk

  9. Yohablo Subject pronoun: Tells us who does the action. Stem: the part of the verb that does not change. Verb ending: the suffix you add to match the subject.

  10. Try again with another AR verb: Drop the “AR” To dance YO BAIL AR O And replace it with an “O” Yobailo= I dance

  11. Try again with another AR verb: Drop the “AR” To sing YO CANT AR O And replace it with an “O” Yo canto= I sing

  12. Try again with another AR verb: Drop the “AR” To listen YO ESCUCH AR O And replace it with an “O” Yoescucho= I listen Yoescuchomúsica= I listen to music

  13. By following this pattern, you can take any regular AR verb and turn it into a Spanish phrase with a subject and verb.

  14. What is the “yo” form of the following verbs? Write it on your whiteboard. DIBUJAR CANTAR TRABAJAR NADAR

  15. Now expand on the phrase using the word you know for “SCHOOL.”I walk to school. Try this: Using the infinitive ANDAR – TO WALK, how would you say, I WALK? Yoando. I walk Yoando a escuela.

  16. The verb “NECESITAR” means “to need.”Try this: I need a pencil. Yonecesito un lápiz.

  17. The verb “TOCAR” means “to play (an instrument).”Try this: I play the guitar. Yotoco la guitarra.

  20. Step 1: For each hour on the clock, write an activity that you might do at that time, using the Spanish “yo” form.>Use your list of AR verbs. >Write on the inside of the clock. Yobailo Yonecesitounapluma Yoestudio Yotrabajo Yovisito mi tía

  21. Regular verbs that end in ER work the same way. Drop the “ER” To eat COM ER O And replace it with an “O” Yocomo= I eat

  22. Try again with another example. Drop the “ER” To drink BEB ER O And replace it with an “O” Yobebo= I drink

  23. AND regular verbs that end in IR are conjugated the same too! Drop the “IR” To live VIV IR O And replace it with an “O” Yo vivo= I live

  25. Drop the “IR” To write ESCRIB IR O And replace it with an “O” Yoescribo= I write

  26. The “tú” form is a little trickier because the conjugation depends on the ending of the verb.

  27. For regular verbs that end in AR, the ending of the “tú” form is “AS,”but we follow the same process.

  28. Start with the infinitive: Now, drop the “AR” To talk HABL AS AR And replace it with an “AS” Túhablas = You talk
