  2. What is the P.T. ? • Contains all of the elements and helps explain/predict physical and chemical properties. • Organized by increasing atomic number • ELEMENT: A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler forms.

  3. How is it Organized? • The elements can be divided as being either metals or non-metals. • Metals: Are found on the left side of the staircase. Are malleable (can change shape), have a high lustre (shiny), are soft and solid. • Non-metals: Are found on the right side of the staircase. Are non-malleable, are dull, hard and usually gas. • Metalloids: Touch the staircase, usually solid, have properties of metals and non-metals.

  6. How is it organized? • The P.T. has columns called groups which go top to bottom. • There are 18 groups. • Some groups are called chemical families and have specific names e.g. Alkali Metals, Alkaline Earth Metals, Halogens and Noble Gasses. • Elements in the same group have similar properties.

  7. How is it organized? • The P.T. also has ROWS which go left to right, these are called periods.

  8. Alkali Metals (Group #1): Highly reactive family of metals. Alkaline Metals (Group #2): Fairly reactive family of elements. Halogens (Group 7/17): Highly reactive family of non-metals. Noble Gasses (Group 8/18): Non-reactive family of non-metals.
