  1. ANNOUNCEMENTS

  2. Your Mid-Term • Has been moved to March 25– that’s next Tuesday. • What do you need to do: • 1. Turn in a project. • 2. Similar to what I just had you do • 3. Format your OWN Commercial/PSA. • You will turn in a Radio script for it. • You will turn in a TV script for it (2 column format) • You will turn in a storyboard for it. • A 2 page essay on what Internet elements you would use.

  3. Writing for the Internet • Follow the Ten Commandments! • Thou shalt write in an informal manner that is interactive, dynamic and current. • Do NOT repurpose documents for print on the internet. • Instead rethink the content and how it could be used. • Not just about words: you need to consider the presentation of the site. Is it interactive? And where can you use key words?

  4. Ten commandments of Internet writing. • Words are Graphic: Think of the size of the Text you use. Their COLOR and how they are layered. • “Chunk it out, Chunk it Down.” • Because the Internet is Immediate – people are less patient to wait for information. • They don’t want to take the time to read big blocks of texts. • Example of actual website that is just terrible: • http://bierzto.pl/administrator/teacup-pigs-full-grown&page=3

  5. Writing for the Internet • Don’t use big blocks of Text – it will deter the reader. • If you have a lot of information: break down the text or separate it with bullet points. • “Chunk it down” – Shorten it. This goes for every commercial, PSA, and Radio script you write as well.

  6. Broadcast and Radio “chunk it down” • Whenever there is a news story or a film based on a novel, it is shortened. • http://www.elpasotimes.com/news/ci_22569796/suspect-allegedly-confessed-twice-1977-killing?IADID=Search-www.elpasotimes.com-www.elpasotimes.com • http://www.kvia.com/news/Affidavit-reveals-son-helped-break-36-year-old-homicide-case-that-led-to-mother-s-arrest/-/391068/18500042/-/15j300yz/-/index.html

  7. Don’t reinvent the wheel -> Just link to it. • Cuts down on your copy. • Interactive • Gives people something to follow. • Use traditional newspaper structure -> the Inverted Pyramid.

  8. Writing for the Internet…. • At the Top – and very beginning of your piece you must have what the commercial is about (especially in straight sell) • You need to let your audience know what the issue/product/cause is about. (Show the product once at beginning). • For the Internet definitely put what the story is about at the top!

  9. Know your audience • There are different websites. • Your writing for the web will depend on what your target audience is. • Nick Jr. • CNN • Patch.com • Hollywood Reporter • Etc.

  10. The Internet • According to Forbes by 2016 advertisers will spend about $77 billion on ads online. • This is a booming industry but it is one you must be cautious of. • With digital devices everyone can be reached. • With the Internet change is constant and so your online ad/PSA/commercial must be “evergreen.” or Flexible.

  11. The Search Engine • How to make your commercial or site appear on the first top page of Google. • Titles are important. • Remember they must be accurate, target an audience and yet at the same time use catchy words or phrases that would make people want to “click” and read more.

  12. Internet content • Make sure the text and information is accurate. • Does not mislead. • Define immediate and long term goals. • Tailor the title of the story (if you are in charge of that) for buzzworthiness – using words

  13. In TV “Less is more.” • On the Internet – this remains the same. But if you have additional content you would like to add – you can do so via pages, links and interactive tools.

  14. Writing Exercise • Select a television or radio commercial. Take a few moments to review it. Now, think of ways you would incorporate an online connection? - Ex: Hash tags, a web page dedicated to it? What is on that web page? Video? Photos? The site should Provide links to further research on the product/service/PSA.

  15. Writing Exercise continued • Now that you’ve thought of some ideas – write up a short paragraph or two trying to sell the commercial idea in print. • It’s just like PR: You put the most exciting news at the top then continue on with detailed information on the specifics. • (Example of some pressers  • Think of a catchy Phrase that might be Googled. • This will increase your outreach.

  16. When adapting a print ad for Radio, TV or online: • Begin with precise information at the very top – Lead: Key information at the top. • Going back to Say It, Explain it, Repeat it. • Use short, simple words. Don’t get too Technical. • Be concrete and mean what you say. • Be Clear. • Have an informal tone, conversational. • Make sure what you write in your script isn’t taken out of context.

  17. Writing scripts • In the two column script spell out: • Phonetics • Numbers

  18. Assignments: • Look up a Blog or a VLOG • Bring it to class on Thursday • You will present and tell us what interactive elements they use. • Examples: Twitter, Youtube – Hashtags – photo galleries. • Pintrest. • Make note of advertising. • ALSO if you do not have your scripts and storyboards have that to bring and present.
