  1. Acids Lesson 3 Strong and Weak Bases

  2. Strong and Weak Bases Strong basescompletelyionize in water to produce OH-. There are 9 Arrhenius strong bases. They are Group I and heavy (bottom 3) Group II hydroxides. LiOH  Li+ + OH- NaOH  Na+ + OH- KOH  K+ + OH- RbOH   Rb+ + OH- CsOH  Cs+ + OH- FrOH  Fr+ + OH- Sr(OH)2  Sr2+ + 2OH- Ba(OH)2  Ba2+ + 2OH- Ra(OH)2 Ra2+ + 2OH- Highlight the nine metals on your periodic table Note all bases make OH-

  3. There are two more Bronsted type strong bases. They are found on the right highlighted area of the acid chart -p 6. O2- NH2-

  4. There are two more Bronsted type strong bases. They are found on the right highlighted area of the acid chart -p 6. O2- + H2O NH2-

  5. There are two more Bronsted type strong bases. They are found on the right highlighted area of the acid chart -p 6. O2- + H2O  NH2- H+

  6. There are two more Bronsted type strong bases. They are found on the right highlighted area of the acid chart -p 6. O2- + H2O OH- + OH- NH2- + H2O H+

  7. There are two more Bronsted type strong bases. They are found on the right highlighted area of the acid chart -p 6. O2- + H2O OH- + OH- NH2- + H2O  H+ H+

  8. There are two more Bronsted type strong bases. They are found on the right highlighted area of the acid chart -p 6. O2- + H2O OH- + OH- NH2- + H2O NH3 + OH- H+ H+

  9. There are two more Bronsted type strong bases. They are found on the right highlighted area of the acid chart -p 6. O2- + H2O OH- + OH- NH2- + H2O NH3 + OH- Again, all bases make OH- H+ H+

  10. Weak Bases A weak base is one that partially reacts with water to produce OH-. Arrhenius: Zn(OH)2(s)⇄ Zn2+ + 2OH- Mg(OH)2(s)⇄ Mg2+ + 2OH- Be(OH)2(s)⇄ Be2+ + 2OH- These are the metal hydroxides that are not highlighted on the periodic table. The equilibrium is described by a Ksp Ksp = [Zn2+][OH-]2

  11. Bronsted Weak Bases: F-

  12. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O

  13. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O H+

  14. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O ⇄ HF + OH- C2O42- + H2O H+

  15. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O ⇄ HF + OH- C2O42- + H2O ⇄ H+ H+

  16. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O ⇄ HF + OH- C2O42- + H2O ⇄ HC2O4- + OH- HCO3- + H2O H+ H+

  17. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O ⇄ HF + OH- C2O42- + H2O ⇄ HC2O4- + OH- HCO3- + H2O ⇄ H+ H+ H+

  18. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O ⇄ HF + OH- C2O42- + H2O ⇄ HC2O4- + OH- HCO3- + H2O ⇄H2CO3 + OH- C6H5O73- + H2O ⇄ H+ H+ H+

  19. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O ⇄ HF + OH- C2O42- + H2O ⇄ HC2O4- + OH- HCO3- + H2O ⇄H2CO3 + OH- C6H5O73- + H2O ⇄ HC6H5O72- + OH- NH3 + H2O⇄ H+ H+ H+

  20. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O ⇄ HF + OH- C2O42- + H2O ⇄ HC2O4- + OH- HCO3- + H2O ⇄H2CO3 + OH- C6H5O73- + H2O ⇄ HC6H5O72- + OH- NH3 + H2O⇄NH4+ + OH- H+ H+ H+

  21. Bronsted Weak Bases: F- + H2O ⇄ HF + OH- C2O42- + H2O ⇄ HC2O4- + OH- HCO3- + H2O ⇄H2CO3 + OH- C6H5O73- + H2O ⇄ HC6H5O72- + OH- NH3 + H2O⇄NH4+ + OH- They all make OH- by accepting a proton from water! H+ H+ H+
