SELF-ESTEEM. DO NOW:. What is meant by a person’s self-esteem?. What is Self-Esteem?. Refers to how much YOU respect yourself and like yourself. Many psychologists think that high self-esteem has a positive effect on health, while low self-esteem has a negative effect on health.

  3. What is Self-Esteem? • Refers to how much YOU respect yourself and like yourself

  4. Many psychologists think that high self-esteem has a positive effect on health, while low self-esteem has a negative effect on health.

  5. People with high self-esteem: • Accept themselves for who they are. • Have a realistic view of their strengths and weaknesses. • Maintain a positive attitude even when they a fail a task • Form close relationships with people who respect and value them because they value themselves.

  6. People with low self-esteem: • Don’t have much respect fro themselves. • Judge themselves harshly and worry too much about what others think. • “Put on an act” in public to impress others and hide their insecurities. • Are often prevented from trying new things for their fear of failing. (I can’t do that/I am not smart enough)

  7. Research shows… • People with low self-esteem are more likely than their peers to: • Use drugs • Drop out of school • Become Pregnant • Suffer from eating disorders • Engage in violence

  8. QUESTION?? How does self-esteem develop?

  9. Answer: • Self-esteem drops in early adolescence, increases gradually during adulthood, and decreases again toward the end of life. • Childhood – need support and encouragement • Adolescence – critical of appearance • Adulthood – accomplish goals and take control

  10. Written assignment: • How can you achieve and maintain high self-esteem? Paragraph 1 – how can you achieve high Level Self esteem? Paragraph 2 – how can you maintain this level? Paragraph 3 – What barriers could cause the level to lower?
