  3. IT’S NORMAL… • Ups and downs are normal. • Good mental health includes… • Sense of belonging • Sense of purpose • Positive outlook • Self- sufficiency • Healthy self-esteem

  4. SELF-ESTEEM • How much you VALUE, RESPECT and feel CONFIDENT about yourself.

  5. FACT or FICTION?? • Teens with healthy self-esteem are stuck-up, arrogant or feel that they are better than anyone else.

  6. Fact or fiction? • Teens who act arrogant or superior to others often masking low self-esteem. Individuals with healthy self-esteem do not feel they need to treat others badly to bolster their own self image.

  7. fAct or fiction? • If you have a poor self-esteem, it’s a problem you will have for your ENTIRE life.

  8. fact or fiction? • Individuals can control their level of self-esteem. It changes throughout life and can be improved.

  9. MASLOW HIERARCHY OF NEEDS • 5 levels of needs essential to human growth and development. • ANOTHER TRIANGLE… 5 1

  10. The levels… • LEVEL 1: PHYSICAL NEEDS: hunger/thirst/sleep /shelter • LEVEL 2: SAFETY: secure from danger • LEVEL 3: BELONGING: love and be loved

  11. LEVEL 4: RECOGNITION: achievement and to be recognized • LEVEL 5: REACHING POTENTIAL: self-actualization

  12. Self-actualization: striving to be the best that you can be • Personal Identity: the sense of yourself as a UNIQUE individual. • Personality: unique set of characteristics • Priorities: something you deem worthy and will complete before other tasks.

  13. Criticism… • Constructive vs. non-constructive… • What’s the difference? (you tell me)

  14. Constructive criticism • Non-hostile comments that point out problems and ENCOURAGE improvement • Try this not that… • Great idea but…

  15. Non-constructive criticism • Aka RIDICULE… • Hostile comments that point our problems and make someone feel bad about themselves.
