  2. Setting the Scene • Boston Tea Party – 3 British ships filled with chests of dried tea leaves sitting in the Boston Harbor. • Colonists were mad at the British for taxes. They entered the ships and dropped 342 chests of tea into the harbor.

  3. History of the Time • The Revolution – The war to set America free from British rule • Independence – The Declaration of Independence was approved by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

  4. People are Talking About • The First “People’s President” – Andrew Jackson – 7th President – thousands of people attend Jackson’s inauguration • We, the People – declare all men and women are equal • Travel – roads are primitive.. Americans develop trails, turnpikes, canals, steamboats and railroads

  5. People are Talking About • Firsts • First streetlights are used in Philadelphia (1757) • Chocolate is first manufactured in the US (1765) • Elizabeth Blackwell is the first American woman to receive a medical degree (1849)

  6. Fashion • Pioneer Women – smock like dresses and petticoats over their skirts. Wool or cotton bonnets protect their face. • Frontiersmen – loose-fitting, thigh length hunting shirts – made from deer skin or homemade cloth – without buttons and belted or tied at the waist. Deerskin trousers are also worn.

  7. Food • Frontier and Farms – corn grown in the fields and meat from the family cattle, hogs, sheep, chickens and wild game • Southern Plantations – Dinner began at 3 and continued into the evening. Start with soup, followed by mutton, ham, beef, turkey, duck, greens, vegetables, potatoes, beets, and hominy. End with pudding, tarts and ice cream.

Arts and Entertainment • Artists paint portraits of notable Americans • The Contrasts was the first American comedy performed by professional actors in1787. • Philharmonic established in 1842. • Something close to modern baseball evolves in the 1840’s. • At corn gathering time, as many as forty or fifty people may gather to dance, hold contests, eat and tell jokes.

Literature of the Time • People are Reading • Magazines – Sarah Josepha Hale was forceful editor of Ladies Magazine in 1828 to 1837 • Newspapers – 1765- 30 newspapers; 1830 – about a thousand newspapers • The Frugal Housewife – published in 1829 – full of tips for cooking, housekeeping and home remedies

  10. Literature of the Time • People are Writing • About America – jot down impression of this country • About Politics – express themselves – tack up paper everywhere.

Literary Trends • Reason to Romanticism – Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed the optimism of a growing nation • Dark side – Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne • Transcendentalists – believe basic truths can be reached only by “going beyond” or transcending reason and reflecting on the world of spirit.
