  2. My Position • Containment was a good idea • We saved South Korea from communists • Harry Truman was U.S. President, his Truman Doctrine prevented the spread of communism

  3. Invasion • North Korea Invaded South Korea in June of 1950. • They overran most of the country including the capitol of Seoul. • The North had Russian made T-34 Tanks

  4. Psychological Perspective • Red Scare or Fear of Communism

  5. Geographic Perspective • A communist Korea would threaten Japan • A democratic Korea would threaten Communist China

  6. Economic Perspective • South Korea is an important trading partner for the United States

  7. Why there are two Koreas • United States and Russia agreed to jointly occupy at the end of WWII

  8. Stakeholders • The President • The People of the United States • Companies doing business with S. Korea, Japan and China

  9. Costs • The costs in terms of life were very high • $30 Billion in 1950 dollars

  10. Benefits • Saved South Korea from Communism • Demonstrated to other countries that U.S. would stop aggression • Strengthened our friendship with Japan and United Nations

  11. Why we should study Foreign Policy • To understand why we went there • To understand why we are still there • To solve the problem

  12. Conclusion: • The Truman Doctrine was good • Japan, China, South Korea and the United States must work together to resolve the problem of two Koreas
