  5. Breaking a section down • The section can be divided into halves, quarters, halves of halves • These quarters can be broken into halves or quarters • They are broken down by combining the words East, West, North, South north west east south

  6. Breaking a section down • Yellow = 1 section = section 8 • orange = NE ¼, section 8 • Blue = NW ¼, NE ¼, section 8 N W E S

  7. How big is that section • 1 whole section = 640 acres = 1 sq. mile • ½ section = 320 acres • ¼ section = 160 acres • ¼ of a ¼ section = 40 acres 640 acres 320 acres Section 8 160 acres 40 acres

  10. Writing the legal description • Locate desired plot of land • Figure out what section it is located in and what portion of section • Smallest part is listed first • Work your way out from the section to the principal meridian • For example
