  1. KBA Nominees Grades 3-5 2013 Presented by Michelle Lemmon, Library Media Specialist, Model Lab School Richmond, Kentucky, EKU

  2. Justin Case: School, Drool, and Other Daily Disasters by Rachel Vail (Realistic Fiction/Humor) It's the start of the school year, and nothing feels right to Justin. He didn't get the teacher he wanted, he's not in the same class as his best friend, and his little sister, Elizabeth, is starting kindergarten at his school. Elizabeth doesn't seem nervous at all. Justin is very nervous about third grade. And to top it off, he's lost his favorite stuffed animal, but he can't tell anyone, because technically he's too old to still have stuffed animals. Right? Here is third grade in all its complicated glory the friendships, the fears, and the advanced math. (from the cover)

  3. Justin Case: Shells, Smells, and the Horrible Flip-Flops of Doom by Rachel Vail Although this is NOT a KBA Nominee for 2013, it is a sequel to the first Justin Case. It’s the summer between Justin’s 3rd and 4th grade year- if you liked Justin Case: School, Drool, and Other Daily Disasters, you’ll also enjoy Justin Case: Shells, Smells, and the Horrible Flip-Flops of Doom

  5. The PS Brothers by MaribethBoelts (Realistic Fiction) Russell and Shawn call themselves the PS Brothers: P is for poop, S is for scoop, and Brothers is because they're best friends. Scooping poop is the fastest way to earn money to buy a puppy. These two are crazy about dogs. And they're sure that once their puppy grows into a tough dog, no one will ever pick on them for being weak or poor again.

  6. The PS Brothers by MaribethBoelts The PS Brothers is a great book- especially for dog-lovers. The book also has a deeper level of events, when Russell and Shawn find out that the guy that they want to buy a puppy from is actually involved in dog fighting. They have to make some tough decisions about their own actions, with this knowledge. On the back cover, there’s a short blurb about the Humane Society and the website for more information about the dangers of dog fighting, www.humanesociety.org . (alternate cover)

  8. Smile by RainaTelgemeier (Full Color Graphic Novel) From sixth grade to high school, Raina has to deal with her teeth--braces, lost teeth, dental surgery--especially after an accident injures her front teeth (the dental details throughout aren't for the squeamish). She suffers through surgery, implants, headgear, false teeth, and a rearrangement of her remaining incisors. She also has to cope with boys, friends, school, and puberty. Her friends offer little solace through this trying ordeal, spending more of their time teasing than comforting her. After years of these girls' constant belittling, Raina branches out and finds her own voice and a new group of friends. A charming memoir of her own experiences. 9. Drama by RainaTelgemeier (Full Color Graphic Novel, NOT a 2013 KBA Nominee, published Fall 2013) Callie loves theater, but she's a terrible singer. So, she's the set designer for the stage crew of the school play, and she's determined to create a set worthy of Broadway on a middle-school budget. But she doesn't know much about carpentry, ticket sales are down, and the crew members are having trouble working together. And there’s the onstage AND offstage drama that comes once the actors are chosen, and when two cute brothers enter the picture, things get even crazier! (from the cover)
