  4. Creating film • We will learn how to visualize, script, produce, edit and distribute short films and documentaries.

  5. Products • We will be producing a regular video newsmagazine for the school, as well as numerous other projects.

  6. Digital Photography • We will learn the basics of digital photography, including portrait photography.

  7. Digital Comics • We will learn the basics of “Comic Life,” a program for creating digital comics and graphic novels.

  8. Audio Production • We will learn the basics of audio recording and editing.

  9. SOME THINGS TO TALK ABOUT AHEAD OF TIME!

  10. Use of Equipment • This class uses thousands of dollars in video equipment. • It must be handled with the greatest care AT ALL TIMES!

  11. Behavior Outside of the Classroom • If we filmed and produced all of our videos in this room, they would be the most boring things ever! • Students will be shooting out on the campus and must be professional at all times!

  12. Working outside of the classroom • While shooting on campus will be awesome, you may want other settings and shots in your films! • You will sign out equipment, BE CAREFUL WITH IT AT ALL TIMES!

  13. Outside the Room Requirements • We will have a number of assignments, such as interviews and sports highlight shows, in which the student will be required to work outside of the classroom.

  14. Grading Participation • I will sit down with each student and give you a grade based upon how hard you are working, kind of like a performance evaluation.

  15. Scripting Requirements • After the first few freeform assignments, students will have to plan, storyboard and script all of their work ahead of time. This is difficult and time consuming, but MUST be done!

  16. Drugs and YOU! • Because a great deal of the funding for our equipment comes from the Colorado Safe and Drug-free Schools program, we WILL be working on safety/drug free projects!

  17. School Deliverables • We will be creating a show of some sort for the school. • This will have to be created on a deadline, NO EXCUSES!

  18. Rotating Media Units • Starting with week 4-5, we will be working in a series of FIVE rotating units. • Students will have to be able to work independently. • NO COMPLAINING!

  19. What about TSA?

  20. Sample TSA Competitions that would pertain to Media Productions. • Digital Video Production:Participants (three teams per state, one entry per team) develop a digital video/film that focuses on the given year’s theme. Sound may accompany the film. The theme for 2011 is Drama.  The theme for 2012 is Suspense. • On Demand Video: Participants (one team of two or more students per chapter, one entry per team) write, shoot, and edit a sixty second video during the conference in this on-site event. • Photographic Technology:  Students (one individual per chapter, one entry per individual) capture images and process photographic and digital prints that depict the current year’s published theme. Twelve (12) qualifying semifinalists participate in an on-site event in which they capture digital images and utilize multimedia software to prepare a storyboard/outline and media presentation of newsworthy TSA conference activities and events. The theme for 2011 is Doors. The theme for 2012 is Perspectives.

  21. The Good News! • You will not take another class your high school career that will allow you to be as independent and creative as this class.

  22. Writing!

  23. We will be doing a lot of writing this year…

  24. …but writing in Media is not as bad as you think. We get to watch short films and critique them. It’s kinda fun.

  25. If you don’t think you can do it, get out now!

  26. Soooo… What is Mr. B. like anyway?

  27. Identifying Characteristics of Mr. B. • Generally easy to get along with. • Honest. • Good listener. • Doesn’t play favorites. • Supportive. • Randomly explosive at times. Picture taken by my 5 year old son, Spencer.

  28. What are the rules for this place, as long as you are jabbering away?

  29. The Rules of The Tech Lab

  30. Food and Drink • School Policy this year: Students can have water, but only from enclosed containers. • Don’t like it? Talk to the boss, I am just following rules.

  31. Something that really irritates me… • If someone eats in the room and then throws the wrappers on the floor, behind their computer, under their chair. • See: Random explosions.

  32. Music • Machines that create music are allowed in the Tech Lab, but only when WORKING on a project. • DO NOT listen to music while Mr. B. is lecturing. • Special words about Music in the Tech Lab. • DO NOT play streaming music from your computer!

  33. Funny Movies! • Nope, sorry! • Hogs bandwidth. • Wastes time. • See: Random Explosions.

  34. Hats and other headcoverings. • School policy forbids the wearing of a hat on campus this year. • If a student has a hat on in the classroom, it will be confiscated. • Do it twice and the world may end.

  35. Cell Phones • I will tolerate Cell Phones in the Tech Lab for music listening purposes. • NO TEXTING, NO FACEBOOKING! • If I ask for your phone, give it to me or face possible suspension. • Taken Cell Phones will be given to Mr. Yaussi and you will need to serve detention to retrieve it.

  36. What About Day Planners? • Day Planners are a BIG THING this year. Teachers are expected to use them in EVERY class. • Don’t like it, talk to the boss!

  37. Games • Access to computer games in The Tech Lab is strictly prohibited. • Most online games are blocked anyway. • No Solitaire!

  38. Email • I do not want people checking their email during class. • If you need to check email, do it from your phone during passing period or here after school.

  39. My Computer • DO NOT touch my teacher’s computer without permission! • This is a violation of the code of conduct and you can be expelled!

  40. Respecting The Tech Lab • Keep your feet off the desks and chairs. • Please don’t mess with my windchimes, my spider, my iPhone or other stuff without permission.

  41. IT’S FREEZING IN HERE! • Yeah, I know, get used to it. • Try wearing a sweater…

  42. Starting the Class • At the start of most class periods, I will have a slide up with my instructions for getting started for the day. This will usually have a time limit and will likely involve your Day Planner. • If the class takes longer to get prepared than the time limit, I will keep everyone after class to compensate.

  43. Late Work • Work turned in late or missed because of an unexcused absence will receive a score of 0. • If you need help or more time on an assignment, SEE ME before it is due!

  44. Turning in Assignments • All Work will be submitted via the V: Drive Folder with your name on it. • Improperly copied or misnamed files will not receive any credit.

  45. What should I call my files? • Files are always called the same thing: lastname_assignmentname.doc

  46. Are there tests? • There will be performance skills Final Exam at the end of the semester. • There will be a FINAL PROJECT at the end of spring semester.

  47. How does Mr. B. teach? • I don’t. I do not lecture AT ALL in the Technology Lab. • Years of experience has taught me that this is the right thing to do.

  48. So how are we gonna learn?

  49. Escaping the Tech Lab • Sounds awful? You can drop the class… • However, I will let you get out once in awhile…

  50. Passes • There will be no Passes given to any students if I am talking or discussing projects. • Students can ask to use a hall pass. IF THEY HAVE THEIR PLANNER! • If you haven’t asked before, I will probably let you go. • If you have, I probably won’t.
