  1. MEIOSIS REDUCTION DIVISION

  2. MEIOSIS – POINTS TO REMEMBER • OCCURS ONLY IN THE GAMETES • PRODUCES 4 HAPLOID CELLS WHICH ARE NOT GENETICALLY IDENTICAL TO EACH OTHER • OCCURS IN TWO PHASES (I & II) • (WHERE DOES MITOSIS OCCUR?) • (WHAT DOES MITOSIS PRODUCE?)

  3. MEIOSIS • MEIOSIS IS THE PROCESS OF REDUCTION DIVISION IN WHICH THE NUMBER OF CHROMOSOMES IN EACH CELL IS CUT IN HALF THROUGH THE SEPARATION OF HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOMES.

  4. WHAT IS A HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOME? • A pair of chromosomes, one inherited from each parent, that have corresponding gene sequences and that pair during meiosis.

  5. MEIOSIS SUMMARY

  6. MEIOSIS TERMS • TETRAD – STRUCTURE CONSISTING OF 4 CHROMATIDS; FORMED WHEN EACH CHROMOSOME PAIRS WITH ITS CORRESPONDING HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOME • CROSSING OVER – HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOMES EXCHANGE PORTIONS OF THEIR CHROMATIDS; RESULTS IN THE EXCHANGE OF ALLELES BETWEEN HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOMES, PRODUCING NEW COMBINATIONS OF ALLELES (GENETIC VARIABILITY)

  7. TETRAD

  8. CROSSING OVER

  9. OOGENESIS • THE PRODUCTION OF EGG CELLS;

  10. OOGENESIS

  11. SPERMATOGENESIS • THE PRODUCTION OF SPERM CELLS;

  12. SPERMATOGENESIS
