The problem of satisfactory planning in Karachi • Groups of politicians and leader ignore the planning in Karachi • Taxes are kept in their own pocket • Land mafia • Land reserved for parks, schools and hospitals are converted into parking area or slums. • Cantonment in Karachi control about 5% of the area. • Karachi development authority have to consult many other bodies before doing any developmental work. This increase the time and cost.

  4. Orangi pilot project • It is a socially innovative project carried out in 1980s in the squatter areas of Orangi Town. • Orangi was an under developed area. • Filthy water • Women lacked education • Cracked walls and sealing • Open disposal of waste and sewage on the road. • It was initiated by AkhtarHameed Khan, and involved the local residents solving their own sanitation problems. • The OPP comprises of around 100,000 houses in which about one million people live. • It spreads over 8000 acres of land. • People who live in these houses at the OPP are Biharis, Pathan, Mohajirs, Punjabis, Balochis and Sindhis from Pakistan.

  5. Karachi master plan • A Master plan for Karachi has been, finally prepared which says that Karachi should be expanded Vertically and not horizontally, which means more high rise in the city. • The plan is also known as “Karachi Strategic development Plan 2020″. • This is the sixth Master Plan of the city. The first was prepared in 1923, second in 1945, third in 1952, fourth in 1994 and fifth in 2000.
