  10. Summarizing the body in the introduction (i.e., apart from the possible initial presentation of arguments in the establishing the niche section) • Lack of source citation for information

  11. Managing the emphasis • Usually in the establishing a research territory section (GT-IT-ST) • New information (something the reader does not know yet) is placed in a subordinate clause or phrase.

  12. Managing emphasis Poorly emphasized: [First sentence of the introduction] The death penalty is the solution to the high crime rate in the Philippines. The death penalty is defined as. . . Better: • Establish the problem: Present info on the high crime rate in the Philippines first. • Present the solution: Now you can say that death penalty is seen as the solution to this high crime rate.

  13. Establishing the niche • What niche are you trying to fill? • Be careful of statements like: Studies previously conducted disregard cultural aspect of the issue. Previous studies conducted concentrate on X aspects only. • What do these statements suggest as far as your paper is concerned?
