Strength • Estimated to have several thousand extremists and associates worldwide. • Al-Qaeda serves as a focal point for a worldwide network that includes many Sunni Islamic extremist groups.
Hamas: The Islamic resistance movement. • Formed in late 1987. • Goal: • Liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation. • Establish an Islamic Palestinian state in Israel. • Strength: • Official numbers of members are unknown, though there are tens of thousands of supporters and sympathizers.

Hezbollah: “Islamic Jihad for the liberation of Palestine” • Formed in 1982 as a response to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. • Participated in Lebanon’s political system since 1992. • Goal: • Dedicated to liberating Jerusalem and eliminating Israel. • Formally advocated ultimate establishment of Islamic rule in Lebanon.
