  3. Acts: An Open-Arms Ministry Luke-Acts Devotional Series By Rolan Monje

  4. Acts is about the Holy Spirit • Acts is usually called ‘Acts of the Apostles’ • Yet it can be more appropriately called ‘Acts of the Holy Spirit’ because it is the Holy Spirit who moves and works in the progression of the story

  5. Remember ‘natural outline’ from Acts 1:8? • Jerusalem – Acts 1-7 • Judea and Samaria – Acts 8-12 • ‘Ends of the earth’ – Acts 13-28 This was made to happen by the Holy Spirit!

  6. Holy Spirit – meant for all • Jn 7:39 NIV By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

  7. Holy Spirit – meant for all Ac 2.15-18a NIV (Peter’s sermon) These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “ ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days,

  8. How the Holy Spirit is given • Outpouring – external effect on a person; associated with special abilities • Indwelling- internal effect on a person; associated with forgiveness and salvation

  9. Holy Spirit ‘given’ to all • God intended to grant the Holy Spirit to all • In Acts, God wanted to show that there is no favoritism, and that the Holy Spirit would be available to all • The Jews were the primary recipients of the HS, but Gentiles would soon follow • God showed the outpouring of his Spirit in the OT, but in Acts he also shows this on purpose. This started at Pentecost.

  10. CITIES REPRESENTED AT PENTECOST, ACTS 2

  11. Four ‘outpourings’ of the Holy Spiritin the book of Acts • Jerusalem (Jews) – Acts 2 • Samaria (Samaritans) – Acts 8 • Caesarea (Gentiles, type 1) – Acts 10 • Cornelius baptized • Jews convinced that God had ‘open arms’ • Ephesus (Gentiles, type 2) – Acts 19

  12. The Holy Spirit wants to go forth • We are the continuation of the book of Acts • God expects us to be an ‘open arms’ ministry – open to all including the weak, the timid, the intimidating, outsiders, spectators, newcomers, ‘comebackers’… • We should do all we can so as NOT to stop the actions of the Holy Spirit • All kinds of people need to repent and get baptized

  13. Challenge Let us be the OPEN ARMS MINISTRY that God calls us to be!

  14. Let us now close our notebooks and Bibles, for the surprise quiz ; )
