  2. The Rise of the Dutch • The Dutch saw huge profits in the Spice trade. • They built Capetown in South Africa to resupply ships. • The Dutch East Indian Company. A monopoly of the Spice Islands. • The Dutch just wanted money and trade.

  3. Spain Seizes the Philippines • Claimed by Magellan in 1521. Named after King Philip II of Spain. • Priests tried to convert native Filipinos. ( God, Gold, Glory. ) • The Philippines were a key source of trade. Silver from Mexico, helped to purchase Chinese silk.

  4. India and the Mughal Empire • Babur founded the Mughal empire in 1526. Mongol in Hindi. His grandson Akbar added to the wealth. • India produced the finest the cloth in the world. • Religious conflicts weakened the empire. • The British and French move in and compete.

  5. The British and French Rivalry • The British and French East India companies had their own armies of sepoys - or Indian soldiers. • In 1756 a global war between France and England. (French and Indian War) • Robert Clive defeats the French in India. The British Raj - or ruler.
