Acts 2:38Part 2 “When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:37-38
2. Water Baptism FOR THE FORGIVENSS OF SINS Its Purposes and Designs
Design of Water Baptism Regarding Sin & Salvation • For remission of sins, Acts 2:38 (Mark 16:16) • Release from punishment due sin, 1 John 3:4; Romans 6:23 • “Forgiveness of, cleansing from, salvation from, blotting out of, washing away, no more remembering of…” • Release from effect of one’s past sins, Acts 2:38; Acts 8:12-13 (18-24)
Objection: In Acts 2:38, eis means because of not in order to • Acts 2:38: Repent, and…be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins (eiv afesin άmartiwn) IN ORDER TO HAVE • Matthew 26:28: this is My blood… which is shed for many for the remission of sins (eivafesinάmartiwn) IN ORDER TO HAVE

Design of Water Baptism Regarding the Sinner • An appeal of a good conscience toward God, 1 Pet. 3:21 • Answer, appeal to God for salvation • Blood cleanses conscience, Heb. 9:14 • Blood contacted in baptism, Rom. 6:3 • Boldly enter God’s presence, Heb. 10:19, 22 • Without baptism the appeal to come before God & be saved is denied!
Design of Water Baptism Regarding the Church • Baptized into one body, the church, 1 Cor. 12:12-13 • Added together, Acts 2:41 • Added by the Lord, Acts 2:47 • Added by obeying the Spirit’s command to be baptized, 1 Cor. 12:12-13

Bible Baptism What It Can & Cannot Do
Baptism • MOST religious groups believe in some kind of baptism • MOST religious groups teach something about the subject of baptism • many contradictions in the religious world exist
religious Opinions regarding Baptism Biblical Truth! • mode: burial (Rom. 6:4) • element: water (Acts 8:36, 38; Heb. 10:22) • purpose: to get salvation, for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38, 40, 41) • mode: sprinkling, pouring • element: H. S., word • purpose: to show people that you are a believer; a church ordinance; a good thing to do; etc.
Biblical Truth! Where is the Scripture? ? • mode: sprinkling, pouring • element: H. S., word • purpose: to show people that you are a believer; a church ordinance; a good thing to do; etc. • mode: burial (Rom. 6:4) • element: water (Acts 8:36, 38; Heb. 10:22) • purpose: to get salvation, the remission of sins (Acts 2:38, 40, 41) ? ? ? ?
What Do You Believe? • mode: sprinkling, pouring • element: H. S., word • purpose: to show people that you are a believer; a church ordinance; a good thing to do; etc. • mode: burial (Rom. 6:4) • element: water (Acts 8:36, 38; Heb. 10:22) • purpose: to get salvation, the remission of sins (Acts 2:38, 40, 41)
LOOKING AT WHAT BAPTISM CANNOT DO
Baptism Cannot: • change the heart • heart must be changed before baptism • “hearing” the gospel & “faith” changes the heart
Believing what they “heard” affected their “heart” Heart Changes “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Men and brethren, what shall we do?’” Acts 2:37
Heart Changes BELIEVE FIRST, THEN BAPTISM Acts 8:37,“Then Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’ And he answered and said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and he baptized him.”
Baptism Cannot • change your life Baptism changes your spiritual life and your relationship with God
Bible Baptism • will not make your physical life any healthier • baptized believers often feared for their life in NT • will not necessarily make your social life any fuller • may become an outcast • will not necessarily make your political life any stronger • some were even unwilling to confess Christ (Jn. 12:42, 43)
Bible Baptism • will not necessarily make your business life any more successful • being a Christian may create extra bounds • promotions may have to be crucified • will not make your academic life any easier • will not necessarily make your family life any smoother (Matt. 10:34-38)
Baptism Cannot • remove temptation from your life • “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires. . .”(Jas. 1:14) • Jesus’ example (Matt. 3:13 – 4:11; Heb. 4:15)
Baptism Cannot • Prevent All Wrong • Simon sinned grievously after he was baptized (Acts 8:13, 18-23) • Peter & Barnabas (Gal. 2:11-14) • Paul had to continually discipline his body (1 Cor. 9:27)
Baptism Cannot • permanently secure eternal life • the bible doesn’t teach “once saved, always saved” • the bible exhorts baptized believers to work out their own salvation (Phil. 2:12; 3:11, 12, 14) • the bible is full of warnings about departing
Hebrews 3:12 • “Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God” • It is a warning • It is a warning to “brethren” • It is a warning to brethren who may have an “evil heart” • It is a warning to brethren who may depart
Baptism Cannot • give life to the living (saved), but only to the dead (Iost) • saved people do not get baptized; sinners get baptized to reach salvation • forgiven people do not get baptized; baptized people get forgiven (Col. 2:12, 13) • living people do not get buried; likewise, saved people do not get baptized
To have the hope of eternal life: We need to what Jesus did for us BELIEVE He DIED for our sins He was BURIED He was RAISED 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
To have the hope of eternal life: We need to DIE with Jesus Be BURIED with Him in Baptism We need to be UNITED with Him We will be RAISED like Him Romans 6:3-4
united together in the likeness of His death (6:5) Romans 6:3-6 “we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection” (6:5) “raised with Him through faith” (Col. 2:12) “our old man was crucified” (6:6) Baptism Death Resurrection BURIAL “buried with Him through baptism” (6:4)
LOOKING AT WHAT BIBLE BAPTISM CAN DO
Bible Baptism Can Put You Into Christ “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” (Gal. 3:26, 27) BAPTISM BAPTISM BAPTISM “IN CHRIST” Outside Christ
Bible Baptism Can Put You in Contact With The Blood “Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?” (Rom. 6:3) BAPTISM “Into Death” Christ shed His blood in His death John 19:33, 34
BAPTISM “One Body” “Church” Colossians 1:18, 24 Bible Baptism Can Put You Into The “One Body” “For as the body is one and has many members, but allthe members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spiritwe were all baptized into one body. . .” (1 Cor. 12:12, 13)
Bible Baptism Can Bring Newness Of LIFE Romans 6:3-5
“New Life” in Christ B A P T I S M “In Christ” “New Creation” (Gal 6:15; 2 Cor. 5:17)
Bible Baptism Saves the Soul • places you in Christ where salvation is (2 Tim. 2:10) • places you into Christ’s death where his saving blood was shed (Jn. 19:33, 34) • washes away sin (Acts 22:16) • sets free from sin (Rom. 6:17, 18)
Baptism has nothing to do with a physical cleansing Baptism Saves Baptism is an answer of a good conscience Baptism is something done “toward God” 1 Peter 3:21,“There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ”
1 Peter 3:21“There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ” The Power In Baptism Is Not The Water, But Through The Resurrection! To contend that baptism is not necessary is to cast insult upon the resurrection!
What About US? Did WE come into Christ through baptism? Did WE contact the blood of Christ through baptism? Are WE identified with the Lord’s body through baptism? Have WE had a good conscience toward God by being obedient through baptism? Have WE identified ourselves with the resurrection of Christ?
Some want to say that the forgiveness of sins is better translated "because of forgiveness of sins" rather than "in order to receive" but this sentence is much the same as the one in Matthew 26:28 which is evidently understood “in order to” rather than “because of”. For passages that relate baptism to salvation also see Mark 16:16 and 1 Peter 3:21 among others.
Scripture “Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many FOR the forgiveness of sins” Matt 28:27-28 (NIV).
