  3. PILLARS Programme Goals 1.    To provide quality care and support with the PILLARS Family Wraparound 2. To improve the care and protection of children and young people 3. To provide quality mentors to children and young people affected by imprisonment. 4. To contribute to cutting edge research on crime prevention and reduction

  4. Core Belief • To break the cycle of offending in families, the focus of our programmes are on the needs of the child • Children can be a primary motivator for the prisoner to make positive change • Prisoners do not want their children to follow in their footsteps

  5. The programmes are: • Pro-social • Child focussed • Family/whanau centred • …and strengths based

Auckland Programmes • Helpline – Information & Advice Resource Booklet- outer Auckland areas. • PILLARS Family Wraparound is an integrated programme providing: • Homebased, medium to long term intensive social work support in the home for parents/caregivers. • Mentoring Children of Prisioners 5-18 years.

Family wraparound Plan addressing criminogenic areas Family / Whanau Accommodation Finance Physical Well-being Natural supports Education/Employment Mental & Emotional Well-being Community/ Restorative Justice Parental Responsibility Professional supports Family relationships Law Breaking Peers

  8. Mentoring Children of prisoners • Aged 5 – 18 years • Matched with a pro-social caring, screened, supervised and trained volunteer mentor • For no less than one year • They are one of their natural supports.

  9. Mentors • Must be willing and able to commit for 1 year. • Mentors are screened and trained before acceptance onto the programme. • Ongoing training and supervision support in the specific issues of children of prisoners. • Mentors are a friend and a positive role model. • Mentors can make a difference.

  11. Why This Work is Important • Children of prisoners are six to seven times more likely to end up in prison than any other child. Mentoring helps at risk children/youth overcome the many challenges they face. • Children did not commit the crime, but they pay the price. • To give the children a better chance in life. • To provide children with alternatives. • To help children to get along better with their families.

  12. Crime reduction in NZ • Families that maintain ties, have a healthy, stable home environment and a supportive community are more likely to succeed in leading productive, crime free lives. • The family is probably this nation’s most valuable weapon in fighting crime – they have a vested interest.
