Innovative Smart Cane 2003: Enhancing Mobility for People with Disabilities

NewU Incorporated, founded by Bumsoo Kim, Daniella Bacskay, and Yahya Khattab on May 1, 2003, is dedicated to expanding scientific fields, particularly in mechatronics, while advocating for people with disabilities. Our latest invention, the Smart Cane 2003 (SC03), utilizes advanced sonar and ultrasonic technology to detect obstacles and stairs, improving mobility and safety. With a range of 3cm to 3m and convenient activation, SC03 aims to address the needs of the neglected. Future enhancements will include traffic light detection and height adjustability.   2. Purpose • The company seeks to expand fields of science • Open up fields that mechatronics can exploit • People with disabilities are neglected • Increase funding for diverse causes

  3. Newest Invention • Smart Cane 2003 –(SC03) Brush motor Infrared sensor Transmitter & receiver Ultrasonic sensor SC03

  4. Functionality • Detect objects in path with 3 different levels (sonar) • Detect stairs (preventing falls) • Convenient activation and termination of device • Measures in place to prevent loss of device

  9. Concerns about Design • Sonar device may elicit unwanted responses from animals

  10. Concerns about Design (cont.) • Ultrasonic Dog Chaser produces a discomforting, but not harmful, high frequency sound, audible to dogs but not to humans • Frequency Range:  20,000 Hz - 25,000 HzSound Pressure:  135 dBEffective Range:  Within 20 feet
