  1. Specialized Cells in Plants Xylem, Phloem, Root Caps, and Guard Cells

  2. Specialized Cells • Not only do animals (humans) have specialized cells, so do plants. • Cell differentiation: the process by which specialized cell types develop a specific function. • One plant cell will give rise to a new plant cell with a new function.

  3. xylem • Vascular tissue in plants • Used for transporting WATER and other nutrients

  4. Phloem • Vascular tissue in plants • Used for transporting FOOD(sugar aka glucose)

  5. Guard cells • Located in the epidermis of plants • Purpose: to regulate TRANSPIRATION (the movement and evaporation of water through plants) • Closing and opening of stomata

  6. Root caps • Covers the tip of the root • Cause the roots to grow downward (gravitational pull) • If the root cap is removed, the roots will grow in any direction.

  7. Root hairs • Absorption of water
