  2. Review of Present Participles Find the present participles in this selection from Anne Frank’s diary. Remember that there are 2 parts to the verb phrase. • Bep is going to get a hold of notebooks, especially journals and ledgers, useful for my bookkeeping sister! Margot is thinking about taking a course in calligraphy; I’ve advised her to go ahead and do it.

  3. What is the past participle? The past participle, like the past tense form, ends in –ed. Unlike the past form, the past participle always follows a form of the verb have, which acts as a helping verb. (has/had/have) squeaked (has/had/have) yodeled (has/had/have) babbled Reminder: What is a helping verb? to have- has, have, had to be- is, am, are Reminder: A helping verb + main verb is a VERB PHRASE!

  5. Find that past participle! • Dudley had doodled pictures of doodlebugs when he was young. • Graham had swum in the river before. • Hank and Tupper have drunk ketchup for dinner. • Moe has swallowed minnows by accident. • I have sung a song about ping-pong.

  6. Use a past participle For each sentence, change the verb from past tense to a past participle. • Hank’s bloated goldfish gobbled on the fish food. • Otis dreamed about croaking toads. • The flowers sprang out of the ground. • Nate wore deodorant on dates. • Eighth graders loved English class.

  8. You try it! • Look through your PCR book. • Find as many examples of past participles as you can. • Remember, a present participle has a helping verb + -ed form of the verb! • (has/have/had) _____-ed
