  1. Persuasive Techniques What do authors do to persuade you?

  2. Emotional words • Words that stir you up! • Words that fill you with anger! • Words that fill you with hope. • Words that make pictures in your head

  3. Agitate and Solve • Bring up a problem. • Make the reader feel the need to change something, stop something, do something. • Show what is wrong… then offer a solution.

  4. Word choice • Choose the word that is NOT neutral. Choose the word that is really positive or really negative. • Instead of thin… • Choose skinny (negative) or slender (positive) • Choose “Objection” instead of • I disapprove.

  5. Band Wagon • Come on, let’s join in. Everybodies doing it, why can’t we? • Come on, let’s join in. Everybody else is doing it…why aren’t you?

  6. Rhetorical Question • A question you ask, that you already know the answer to. • A question you don’t expect to have answered. • A question that you don’t need an answer to.
