  2. Fear of Speaking…………… Students tend to stress out in 3 different ways before, during and after their speeches. • Physical Sensations • Emotional Responses • Psychological Responses

  4. Physical Stress: • Before Speech: • Sleepless nights • Upset stomach • Dizziness • Tingling sensations in hands and/or legs • During and After Speech: • Trembling knees • Sweaty palms • Light headedness • Dry mouth • Too much saliva • Nervous cough or laugh • Shaky or strained voice

  5. Emotional Stress: Before, During and After Speech: • Fear • Loss of control • Depression • Panic • Anxiety • Helplessness • Anger • Inadequacy • Feelings of overwhelmed fear

  6. Psychological Stress: Before, During and After Speech: • Loss of memory • Negative thoughts or self-talk • Awkward pauses • Jumbled thought patterns • Nervous repetition of words or phrases – ah, umm, you know?

  7. Things to remember……… • You’re not alone • Skills and techniques can be learned to control stress and apprehension

  8. What to do???? • Identify why you are so nervous • Identify your own types of stress • Will help you…. • Understand what is happening • Find ways to combat specific areas of stress • Gives YOU the control

  9. Give yourself permission… • To overcome your fear of speaking • To Grow • To Make Mistakes

Stage Fright ……. • It’s natural to be anxious • You appear much more relaxed then you feel • Have something important to say • Concentrate on what is said (Big Picture) • Practice your Speech • Visualize Success • Release your tension before you speak • Experience reduced anxiety • The audience is on your side

Building Speaker Confidence • Know how you react to stress • Know your strengths & weaknesses • Know speech principles • Know that it looks worse from the inside • Know your speech • Believe in your topic • Visualize success • Project confidence while speaking • Practice your delivery • Learn from experience

  12. Allow YOURSELF….. • To be YOU • To SUCCEED • To not be PERFECT • To GROW • To BELIEVE in yourself
