  3. The Native Americans were living quite well off the land. Inside the dwellings An Indian girl making Needles from deer bones. Does your stove look like this?

  4. Native Americans were smart! They knew how to use the land. Here you see a stalk of corn and beans planted together so the bean vine could grow up the cornstalk. Corn was an important food for them. They ground it and used it to make corn flour.

  5. LIFE WAS PEACEFUL And then, in 1607, their eyes beheld this…

  6. Who could be on these three ships?

  7. 144 men and boys, 144 days inside the walls of this… Could you have survived?

  8. Tools, gold, religion, spices, metals, food, Clothes, toys What will they want?

  9. The colonist began to build a triangular shaped fort. From whom would they need protection?

  10. Inside the walls of the fort they built homes, a storehouse, and a church.

  11. Two very different cultures, both with needs and abilities. Colonists Powhatan • weapons • metal tools • supplies from England • English ways of dress, • building, cooking • fishing • hunting • growing crops • using nature to survive Could these two cultures learn to share, live, and work together?

  12. What else should you learn? Who is John Smith and what important role did he play in America’s history? Whom did Pocahontas marry? Who was the father of Pocahontas? What important crop did the colonist grow? In 1619 another culture came to live among the colonist. They worked very hard! Who were these people and how did they change America?
