  1. ANATOMY The study of the structure of the human body

  2. What will we study in Anatomy? • Part 1 - Skeletal System – • Functions • Structures • Names of important bones

  3. The Skeletal System • The Skeletal system comprises the bones that make up the skeleton. • There are 206 bones in the normal human skeleton. • In unborn babies, bones start off as cartilage. As calcium is taken in, the bones harden.

  4. FUNCTIONS OF THE SKELETON • SUPPORT - It gives the body shape • PROTECTION - Bones protect vital organs. • MOVEMENT - Allows movement, with the bones acting as levers. • SUPPLY - The bones are a source of supply of blood cells. • STORE - The bones are a store for minerals required for body function.

  5. TYPES OF BONES Bones can be generally classified according to their shape.

  6. The Vertebral Column • Cervical – 7 vertebrae • Thoracic – 12 vertebrae • Lumbar – 5 vertebrae • Sacrum – 5 fused vertebrae • Coccyx – 4 fused vertebrae

  7. FUNCTIONS OF THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN • Protection of the spinal cord • Absorb shocks • Trunk movement

  8. On your worksheet first identify the following bones • Hand bones • Skull • Shin (small bone) • Knee cap • Forearm (little finger side • Ankle bones • Breastbone • Foot bones • Jaw • Ribs • Fingers • Pelvis • Collarbone • Shoulder blade • Thigh bone • Shin (large bone) • Toes • Upper arm • Forearm (thumb side) • wristbones

  9. Now get their correct anatomical names! • Skull • Jaw • Collarbone • Shoulder blade • Breastbone • Ribs • Upper arm • Forearm (thumb side) • Forearm (little finger side • wristbones • Cranium • Mandible • Clavicle • Scapula • Sternum • Ribs • Humerus • Radius • Ulna • Carpals

  10. Now get their correct anatomical names! (Part 2) • Hand bones • Fingers • Pelvis • Thigh bone • Knee cap • Shin (large bone) • Shin (small bone) • Ankle bones • Foot bones • Toes • Meta carpals • Phalanges • Pelvis • Femur • Patella • Tibia • Fibula • Tarsals • Metatarsals • Phalanges
