  4. Blues • earthy raspy voice • 12-bar blues form • Bessie Smith • Blind Willie Johnson • Muddy Waters • R&B: faster, up tempo blues; additional instruments (drums, bass, etc.)

  5. Country & Western • nasal twangy voice • simple music • “country instruments” (banjo, guitar, mandolin, dobro, pedal steel guitar, etc.) • Johnny Cash • Patsy Cline • Hank Williams
